The Wicked threads I usually read and giggle about, but yes, admittedly this one got my goose going. Is it recess yet? I'm ready to go outside and play nicely.

I'm quite inclined to believe she sucks. Her anti-war allies are choosing to overlook this, but Sheehan is quite possibly an anti-Semite and thinks this whole conflict was motivated by a pro-Israel cabal. For some bizarre reason I take that personally.

Yeah. That's got anti jewish sentiment all over it.

Oh, yeah, let's ignore the part where she said the Marines are dying for Israel.

Is she the only person saying that the marines are dying for Israel?
Anyway I don't know anything about what's happening with Israel and the occupation and removing the people. Unfortunately , I know more about that girl in Aruba(and not much about her.)
What is the problem with the jews. Is it jews against jews? Is this like black on black violence? Is it a turf war? Like our gangs in the US?

Yes. I plead total ignorance when it comes to this jewish thingy poo. I have never tried to understand it. I start hearing jews or gaza strip and I become Ted on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
I am admitting I know nothing , nada about the occupation.

Okay, let's dissect this bit-by-bit.
Is she the only person saying that the marines are dying for Israel?
Does it matter? I doubt she's the only person who thinks that way, but that doesn't change the fact that those people are full of ****.
Anyway I don't know anything about what's happening with Israel and the occupation and removing the people.
I can't say that the end of the Gaza occupation is irrelevant to all this, but it most certainly isn't relevant in the way Sheehan says it is. I don't like my native country being blamed as the cause of the Iraq war when it was clearly spawned in the fetid imaginations of senior White House officials.
What is the problem with the jews. Is it jews against jews? Is this like black on black violence? Is it a turf war? Like our gangs in the US?
No. To put it simply, some Israelis think they have a divine mandate to live in the Gaza strip and West Bank, kind of like 19th-century Americans believed in a Manifest Destiny to settle the North American continent all the way to the Pacific coast, Indians be damned.
Since we live in marginally more enlightened times nowadays, the Israeli settlers are being tossed from the Gaza strip. It's not enough, but it's something, at least. Anyway, the evictions haven't gotten nearly as violent as some predicted they would, and I'm rather proud of them for that. I was starting to worry that Israel was being completely controlled by the religious kooks, too. The end result of this should be the Palestinians taking the area back. So that's the (simplified) story.
And I'm still not a Cindy Sheehan fan. Nor am I a fan of those who choose to overlook her more troubling statements just because she happens to be a popular figurehead on the anti-war side. I'll take my advocates unprejudiced, thanks.

plum, i applaud you. it must have been tough to type that with the blood of cindy sheehan's son all over your hands making your fingers all slippery. why is it that anti-semitism is glossed over when spouted in the guise of anti-war rhetoric?

So from your tone , you do not believe those Israelis occupying the gaza strip and the left bank are entitled to do so?
I'm going to have to start reading up on this.
But I get the feeling that I could live til I'm 80 and never really get it.
All I know is some of your orthodox cousins are the worst travelers in the world. Maybe that's why they don't want to move...I'm kidding!

okay see. I didn't get papa's remark at all.
edit: I've read it 3x and now I think I've got it. He's being sarcastic and agreeing that the blood of the soldiers is not the fault of Israel.
edit2: I got the sarcasm but I still don't get how fighting an illegal war in Iraq is the fault of Israel.

The West Bank and Gaza settlements are, as far as I'm concerned, obstacles to peace. And I can't frickin' take that when my whole family lives there. The West Bank, because of Jerusalem and Ariel Sharon's Big Stupid Wall, is a more complicated situation than the Gaza strip, but Israel needs to do work out a way to transfer land there, too. A Palestinian state and some semblence of stability in the area would be a deadly blow to Muslim terrorism the world over. Which is reason #5,437 why I hate Bush- his moronic policies regarding Israel only make his own War on Terror more difficult.
And chita, the reason you don't get why the war is Israel's fault is because it isn't. And Sheehan's tendency to leap to that conclusion leads me to leap to the conclusion that's she's probably an anti-Semite. And in that case she can go screw herself as far as I'm concerned.

8500 settlers? That's a couple of condos. How come such few settlers?
Are these settlers religious zealots?

Yes, they're mostly zealots, but also people who have lived in the area for 40+ years and don't particularly feel like living. On the other hand, the writing has been on the wall for a while, so I have a hard time feeling awful for them.

>Oh, yeah, let's ignore the part where she said the Marines are dying for Israel.
Can you give the exact quote that she said? A lot of people are trying attribute things to her which she did not say. She said that she did not say her son died for Israel. So if she didn't say that then why would she say marines in general died for Israel?
Anyway, whether you believe marines are dying for Israel or not, one thing that I don't think is extremely sketchy to believe is that our foreign policy in places like Israel (giving them weapons and support) and Iraq (helping put Saddam in power and giving them weapons) has added to the terrorists hatred of us. They don't just "hate us for our freedoms."
And you know what, I'm sorry, but I think the title of this thread is really offensive. Have you lost a son in a war you didn't believe in and thought that your son's patriotism was exploited, Cruel? She is Casey's mother and it is her right to deal with his death and try to make positive things come from it how she chooses. I am tired of hearing people persecuting her because they don't think she's acting how they think she should act. Instead of staying at home weeping or just going about her regular life, she is trying to change things, and although I don't agree with everything she says, I appreciate her standing up and doing something.
