wow. i wonder what karl rove would think about that.
Pinguin - "Many people lost their children in this conflict."
And most of them who oppose the war are doing nothing but complaining at home or to friends or on message boards.
"The war is about the soldiers not their political parents, and telling people that her son died for Israel is hardly a tribute to her son."
Saying the war is about the soldiers is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen. When our country is involved in a war, then every citizen of this country is involved, whether directly or indirectly. The majority of this country chooses not to be directly involved and to ignore it, but that is their personal choice, it does not change the fact that the war is about all of us and how we are all put in a position to be victims of this war, not just the soldiers who fight on the front lines. Ask any of the families of 9/11 if they are not involved in the Iraq war in some way.
"How exciting and original."
Actually, the protest of camping out at Bush's ranch in Crawford in protest actually is more original and exciting than the standard peaceful ineffective protests we've witnessed thus far. Sheehan has accomplished one major thing and that is she has gotten national attention. Any anti-war protest with grieving family members of dead soldiers uses exploitation to a degree, but it does not discount the family's grief or their passion in any way.
Plum - "kind of like 19th-century Americans believed in a Manifest Destiny to settle the North American continent all the way to the Pacific coast, Indians be damned"
Except that Europeans killed off three times more Native Americans than American settlers, who had the idea ingrained in them of imperialist colonization from their original European countries.
"And Sheehan's tendency to leap to that conclusion leads me to leap to the conclusion that's she's probably an anti-Semite."
But that would be you leaping to conclusions, not anything based on fact. As jrb pointed out, it is possible to disagree with Israel's actions and not be an anti-Semite.
gothampc - "As usual, Ann Coulter gets it right."
Anyone who believes that is sick, racist, prejudiced, and cruel. Ann Coulter is nothing but a vile publicity whore who places more value in shock and money than citizens of this country. Her comments on morality and trolling for publicity is so ironic, it's funny. Too bad she'll never figure it out.
For those of you who think she is exploiting her son, have you met her? Have you spoken with her directly?
I am just curious, because that would seem the only way to make a truly informed judgment about her actions.

I was making the Manifest Destiny comparison, Matt, to hopefully give people some kind of insight into the state of mind of many of the settlers. Of course anything that happens in a country roughly the size of New Jersey isn't going to equal the scale of colonizing much of North America. But the thinking is comparable- these people think they have a divine right to certain lands.
And I really don't get your Americans/Europeans distinction. The Americans I'm talking about were (are) of European extraction.
Original posters, what about the way the administration used Tillman and Lynch?
Plum - I think when most people talk about the killing of Native Americans in the US, they immediately damn the Americans, when actually, most of the population was wiped out before "Americans" truly existed. The actual "Americans" that killed Native Americans were really closer in mentality to Eurpoeans than the modern image of Americans and American idealism we have today. I don't think very many people consider this distinction when making blanket statements about Americans and neo-Imperialism, which is more about the spread of Capitalism when associated with Americans. Americans are the byproduct of Imperialism and a few did spread the corruption of Manifest Destiny, but it was a remarkably small amount when compared to other countries.

I really have to disagree there, Matt. The 19th century marked a time when there was definitely an American identity descended from but also distinct from Europe. And that's when things like the Trail of Tears, forced assimilation, and the countless battles against Plains Indians happened on the way to settling the country all the way to the west coast. The fact that the idea of colonialism came to the U.S. from Europe doesn't mean it wasn't truly present in this country. All of white American culture came from Europe.
The actual "Americans" that killed Native Americans were really closer in mentality to Eurpoeans than the modern image of Americans and American idealism we have today.
Americans today have nothing to do with the argument. Yeah, we're not overly prone to straightforward colonialism today. But neither are European countries. It's a moot point because I'm talking about ~150 years ago. So I'm still not seeing the distinction here, nor what it has to do with my original point.

God bless her and everyone else that has been affected by this war.
It's America. She can do what she pleases. And we all have the freedom to have our own opinions about it.
I appluade Cindy Sheehan. I send her love and support in her effort to turn her sacrifice into something the might stop the killing of more Iraqi children and bring our brave troops home w safety with all their limbs and lives intact.

Guys, this is Ann Coulter.
Ann Coulter repeats her "New Yorkers are Cowards"
Bored and doing a little "searching"
Wow.
I met Cindy at a campaign function last fall, she is a very authentic woman. She, without a doubt, believes in what she is doing/saying. I find in interesting that this woman simply sat outside the Presidents ranch requesting a meeting the same year the Minutemen mobilized themselves and sat on the border with guns in an effort to turn back 'illegal immigrants' both results in huge mobilization of people from their acts of 'civil disobedience' or vigilantism if you like.
And as unpopular as the war effort has become Cindy has effectively become a moot point, on the other hand the Mintuedudes are still going strong, collecting money, and volunteers from across the country for this summers stand on the border. I find it quite unusual that there seems to be a significant disconnect between what the political establishment considers important and relevant compared with the agenda that NGO's and activists are pressing.
