Dear Friend,
It's been 20 years since Anita Hill courageously spoke truth to power and
exposed Clarence Thomas as a stalker and a sexual harasser during his
Supreme Court confirmation hearings.
And now Thomas' wife Virginia Thomas, a right-wing Tea Party advocate, in
a move as brazen as it is offensive, has asked Anita Hill to apologize to
her abuser. Hill said no. But I say it's long past time for Clarence
Thomas to apologize to Anita Hill.
Virginia Thomas' agenda in approaching Anita Hill with her outrageous
request is unclear. But it's yet another example the Tea Party adherents
brazen attempts to rewrite history and claim victimhood for the powerful
even as they launch attack after attack on minority groups -- be they
women, gays, African Americans, or immigrants.
We shouldn't ignore this bizarre incident. We should accept Virginia
Thomas' challenge and defend history as we know it.
Join me in telling Clarence Thomas he should apologize.
It's easy to do so at the link below.

Posted: 10/21/10 at 12:34pmThough this has garnered much attention, Justice Thomas (and Justice Scalia) may have a MUCH bigger scandal on the immediate horizon. They have both been guests of the Koch brothers' conservative seminars. Don't know the Koch brothers? They are the BIG money (as in tens of millions of dollars) behind the Tea Party, as well as many faux grassroots conservative fronts. The are probably the biggest example of the excess created by the SCOTUS' Citizens United decision. I say 'probably' because, in their wisdom, the SCOTUS has made it extremely difficult to trace the money behind the bulk of this year's campaign money. Make no mistake, if this were Ginsburg cozying up to moveon.org, it would be a BIG deal already.

He will never apologize. Apologizing would be admitting he lied about it during his confirmation. Then what happens? He steps down? All the judgments made by the "Thomas Court" are questioned. A huge constitutional crisis.
Never. Gonna. Happen.

I have no illusion that Thomas will ever apologize either.
I think the ultimate point is to cut into the faux victimization narrative that the Thomas camp is holding up as the truth.
It also reminds Hill that she has supporters. She deserves to know that there are many who still consider her actions brave. I personally admire the aplomb she showed in handling the entire ordeal.
I think signing is a small but telling acknowledgment to Hill's character and how her honesty improved the way women are treated in the workplace

What I got from watching him promote his memoirs on 60 Minutes is a very bitter and aloof man who only shows coolness in laughing when nothing funny is going on. He is bitter about Anita Hill and Yale Law School, his alma mater, which he believed accepted him on affirmative action and blamed the school for the fact he could not get a job fresh out of third year because it was assumed he was an affirmation action token. I am not even making this up. He was a very introverted individual at the time (and actually to the radical left), but his experience at Yale Law really changed him from everything I have read.
That said, I agree with madbrian that him and Scalia should be at the mercy of any ethics committee for that connection to the Koch Brothers (find the New Yorker article on them, it is batty).

I think this is the Olbermann segment Dottie was referring to:

Posted: 10/21/10 at 6:08pmI think this Thomas woman sounds like a wacko, however, I did not find Hill the slightest bit credible. She completely lost me, when she wanted us to believe she was victimized by this man, then followed him to another place of employment. People who are true victims don't follow the abuser, when there is no need to do so. She could never explain herself, adequately, for me. If she was being sexually bothered by this man, then she should have stayed away from him. She kept following her around. There was more to this story than either was admitting. Embracing her as some sort of victim, minimizes true victims in this world. She's a liar, he's a liar, and his wife's a nut.

There's so much wrong with what you just said, but the only thing I'll say is that "People who are true victims don't follow the abuser" isn't true at all.

Posted: 10/21/10 at 11:30pmAnd I don't necessarily think Anita Hill saw herself as a victim. I've worked for people I don't like or respect and have looked the other way about some unsavory behavior at times. Perhaps it was to her professional advantage to "follow him". At the point when the person whose objectionable behavior that you managed to ignore is being considered for a spot on the Supreme Court, everything might look a little different. I don't think her decision to come forward was easy or fun or vindictive. I thought it was brave.

People who are true victims don't follow the abuser, when there is no need to do so.
"True victims"? That's a bizarre and offensive phrase.
If what you're saying is "People who are truly abused don't follow the abuser," then you know absolutely nothing about power, abuse or the abuse of power.

"True victims" - nice phrasing. Only the worthy can be deemed targets of sexual harassment, apparently, just like the only "true" rape victim is a Caucasian virgin who was attacked by a total stranger and fought back physically.
As for Thomas - "victimization narrative" is right. His entire autobiography is pretty much a bitter laundry list of everyone who done him wrong. There's a reason he's the one who keeps maliciously trying to smear and tear down Anita Hill again and again.

Posted: 10/22/10 at 12:55amI think she's a liar. You don't. Okay. And she most certainly presented herself as a victim of sexual abuse and harassment. It was the entire point of the testimony. I watched every second of it. They found one person of the many, many women that both Thomas and Hill worked with, who corroborated her claim, but she was someone he had fired because of poor performance and making homophobic slurs. One other woman claimed that Thomas said some off-color things to her, but she claimed no harassment. Not one other woman was found who agreed with her. In fact, many testified that they didn't believe her, because they never heard her complain about him, and they had never heard him make anything resembling the off-color or harassing remakes she claimed. They were not lovers, and she never testified that they were, so your claims of my not knowing about victims following abusers is moot. That doesn't happen with co-workers. She willingly not only followed him, but continued to call him and take his calls, long after when she alleges the harassment occurred.

Funny how history has a way of re-writing itself.
"Through the years, McEwen said, she has remained reasonably friendly with Thomas. On two or three occasions, she said, she brought friends to his Supreme Court chambers where they sat for long conversations.
But now, she says, "I know Clarence would not be happy with me."
"I have no hostility toward him," McEwen said. "It is just that he has manufactured a different reality over time. That's the problem that he has."
Perjury Clarence?

Posted: 10/24/10 at 3:22pmWhile I do believe that Anita Hill has issues with men, I still found her testimony credible. Times were different then. Many male bosses still felt entitled to every piece of enticing tail in the office back then. I vividly recall watching Thomas' confirmation hearings with a few colleagues when a male of the group remarked "Damn, she [Anita Hill]'s not even a babe" to which a female colleague replied "yeah, but she's got what all you men are really interested in". Thomas' confirmation was a landmark in so many ways, not all of them necessarily good.

Bill Maher the other night brought up something very interesting. I know Bill is a comedian but he asked with all honesty, was Virginia Thomas drunk? I mean, after 20 years,to call this woman up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning and leave a message like that is just insane.
Check out his remarks at the 2:52 mark.
