I was curious about it since it was being made into a movie. So I read the play, finished it in one sitting. Amazing piece of work. Has anyone else read it?

I saw the play on Broadway. Julia Roberts will ruin the movie.

While I would have preferred it to have been Cate Blanchett, I think Julia Roberts will be fine. She is a little miscast, but she will pull it off. The one thing from the show that obviously can't be recreated is the marvellous visual conceit of moving all the props to the back of the stage at the end of each scene. By the final scene, the stage was full and the actors were performing among the debris of the earlier scenes. This gave powerful resonance to Anna's earlier line about baggage.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I stage managed this play back in February, and I actually think Julia Roberts might be really good as Anna. She needs to be attractive, vulnerable, and yet strong at the same time. I'm really excited by the entire cast and can't wait to see the film version. Marber himself adapted the screenplay, so it shouldn't be too bizarrely different (like when Neil LaBute took his play "The Shape of Things" and wrote the screenplay for it.)

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

If Natalie Portman does justice to Alice (which I'm sure she will), she could be looking at an Oscar nomination. Maybe even a win...

Julia Roberts is a Goddess and turns anything into gold. Any other opinion on the matter is invalid.

Matt_G... while I couldn't agree with you more on Madonna, I couldn't agree with you less on Julia. I think she's one of the most overrated actresses around. That said, she is capable of giving a decent performance every now and then. Hopefully she'll do just that.

I saw this on Broadway...Natasha Richardson was incredible. I can see Julia in the role..she'll be perfect.

Closer needs actors that have an internal life going on. Never seen that from Julia Roberts.

I think Julia will be decent.

Natalie Portman is a fantastic actress - I never thought so until I saw GARDEN STATE.

Does anyone think GARDEN STATE has any chance at Oscar Noms?

Talking about plays turning into movies, what about PROOF? Supposedly Paltrow is playing Catherine. I'm really excited with PROOF since it is one of my most favorite plays. I saw it at UTA Halloween weekend and it was FABULOUS. They did such a good job. The set was great, the acting wasn't too bad, nor over the top, and I totally forgot about the dream/ghost thing at the beginning.

omg i actually agree with gotham... weird. okay yeah uh, starring in twenty cookie-cutter romantic comedies does not an actress make. and don't go throwing erin brockabitch in my face... it was the script that was good on that one. i think they should have cast natasha and all would be right in the world. i can't take that self-rightous loud mouth seriously. i'd see it if it weren't for her... she's incapable of turning in a true quality, layered performance. it would be a rather entertaining reality program to see her thrown in an acting class... Stanislavski would through his hands up and say, "zare is nothing i can do!"
however, if anyone sees this film, please let me know if it is any good.

I think GARDEN STATE has a shot with an original screenply nomination and depending on CLOSER, a nomination for Portman if Fox does some advertising to remind people of a film that came out months ago.
