eye, he's talking about a different one (and doing well, i might add). yer still wrong. the thickness of one's head would not prevent bleeding, however the hardness would.

are there many if any out teachers teaching k - 12?

i'm not sure how things are outside the bible belt, but down south, teachers don't have the option. I don't think they are even protected.

and from the teachers I know, it's a very scary thing for them.

Jerby - the teachers in California ARE protected, but that doesn't mean that a vengeful citizen can't make life uncomfortable - as I unfortunately found out first-hand.

It certainly is. But what is the impact on the larger community? There has to be fallout for what Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) in "Ordinary People" called "the lies, the deceit, the covering up"?

in middle school we ahd a tech ed teacher who everyone knew was a lesbian but no one said anything. when i was in 7th grade she came out. since it was middle school where immaturity runs wild, she was made fun of alot. i felt really bad for her but i never stepped up and told people not to make fun of her, since i was questioning my own sexuality and i didn't want to call attention to myself in that way.
i feel bad that i never said anything.

That is how it works, isn't it? In a way, a closeted person is so fearful they feel compelled to engage in distracting behaviors so people won't notice what's right in front of them.

i didn't join them in making fun of her, but at the same time i didn't tell them to stop. i didn't do anything so it's like it's just as bad.

And that certainly was a text book study on the negative impact of one man's desperate efforts to distract people from the issue of his [homo]sexuality. Certainly one extreme end of the contiuum.

It would make a fascinating research study to see what impact that sort of behavior has on a micro and macro level in even small communities. I bet you it would be extremely revealing.

have you ever read the david sedaris story I LIKE GUYS?

in it, he describes how, in school, all the gay kids were aware of each other, & scared of being outed by each other, & thanked god when it was "the other gay kid" getting beat up.

he revisted the topic in his story GO CAROLINA.

I do not care if my children's teachers are gay, straight, single, married, but I would not expect or accept any situation in which the personal sex life of a teacher is a part of my child's education.

in 7th grade my math teacher was a lesbian. Wierd but not enough to make me switch the class

In the school system I grew up in, gay teachers had to be very closeted because they could be fired. In the school system where I live now, I know many very openly gay teachers and it doesn't seem to be a problem. I find it surprising, because our area seems to have an abnormally large number of pedophiles. (In other prisons, the pedophiles are killed by the other inmates. Here, they could form a softball tournament!) It seems like in any other environment the Religious Right lumps homosexuals and pedophiles into the same category as "perverts who are out to get your children". Thankfully, people here - in the very heart of the Bible Belt - seem to be mature and informed enough to seperate the two. The gay teachers are able to live and work in relative peace.

Wow, I wish all closeted gay high school arts teachers had such healthy environments. It'd probably help prevent a LOT of unhealthy acting out.
