Clueless

Whenever I'm having a bad day, or I just don't feel like all that and a bag of chips, very few movies are good at getting me back in a good mood. That is, until I come across "Clueless"...

Alicia Silverstone is perfect as Cher, a rich Beverly Hills 'Betty'. Silverstone succeeds, with flying colors, in making Cher one spoiled brat that we actually like. Brittany Murphy makes a splashy debut here as Tai, the frumpy and bumbling newbie who befriends Cher and Dionne (the hothothot Stacey Dash) and endures one of their famous makeovers. Dan Hedaya is hilarious as Cher's scary-as-hell attorney/father.

This may sound strange, but I think this was one of the best movies of 1995. It fully deserved Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay (it actually got nominated for a Writers Guild Award in that category, as did "Mean Girls"). Cher's journey through high school, grades, matchmaking, and 'Baldwins' (namely her stepbrother, played by Paul Rudd). The movie flies by so fast, it's so enjoyable, and it hits me like a breath of fresh air every time I watch it.

IMHO, this is the best teen movie ever made. It not only ranks with the other greats ("Ferris Bueller", the Brat Pack flicks, "Mean Girls", etc.) but surpasses them. No Oscar nods? As if!

Oscar???

i admit it's a great movie...but nowhere near Oscar worthy.

Cher: Dion, would you say that I'm selfish?
Dion: No. Not to your face.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

An Oscar Nomination for "Best Original Screenplay"?

You may want to sit down for the next part, sweetie, but CLUELESS is a modern version of Jane Austen's classic 19th Century Novel "Emma"...

Hate to be a nit-picker--hope that little fact doesn't mar your enjoyment of the movie!

I've known that for years. I still think it's Oscar worthy. Updated On: 2/18/05 at 01:26 PM

I think this movie is ludicrously over-rated.

I'll agree to that part.

Totally a guilty pleasure though hardly Oscar worthy.

I must also say that "Emma" with Gynneth Paltrow is another of my guilty pleasures.

Heathers is and always will be one of my fave movies.

HEATHERS Trivia:

Kim Walker, who played Heather #1 has a line "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?"
A few years ago, she actually died of a brain tumor.
Talk about coincidentally foreshadowing ones death.

Also, Becky Finn is played by Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen's sister.

Love it, but the first time I saw it I was so disturbed I almost walked out. Not because it was bad but because it was really getting to me. Glad I stayed, tho!

Clueless was awesome....i thought it was pathetic to see Resse Whiterspoon imitating Alicia Silverstone a couple of years after.

For the record, I love both "Legally Blonde" and "Mean Girls" (check my icon). They were smart and funny, and didn't take much (if anything) off of "Clueless".

Clueless absolutely did not deserve any Oscar recognition, I'm shocked that someone would say that.

ElTico- why is Emma with Gwyneth a "guilty pleasure?" I think it's a beautiful film with a stellar cast- Toni Collette, Sophie Thompson, Jeremy Northam, etc.

And I love Heathers.

Hmmm.....
Funny thing is...many films that never win any Oscars live on in the hearts of fans for years. Many become classics. I belive Clueless will still be watched many years from now. I can't describe the pleasure it has brought me. I don't know if the acting was Oscar worthy,(though I love me some Paul Rudd), but I would not have objected to one for the screenplay. It was brisk, clever, sassy and totally relevant for its place on the timeline.

How many Oscar-winning movies are as popular as "Clueless?"

I think Clueless was a great adapted screenplay- it made the transition to a different time and place so smoothly most of its viewers (myself included) probably didn't have a clue it was based on a Jane Austen novel and just loved the movie for its own sake. When I read Emma years later, I was really astounded at how true they stayed to the story without any stiffness.

Hey Love4... didn't mean any disrespect. Emma is fantastic; great performances, writing... I think it was the beginning of my infatuation with English men... Jeremy Northam, YUM! I meant nothing bad by saying it was a guilty pleasure... wrong choice of words, I guess.

re: Clueless

I feel this thread is worth digging up to mention the tenth-anniversary DVD. No interviews with Silverstone on the extras. Does she regret reaching her prime so early in life?
