Cold-read Audition Tips

Hello everyone -

I have an audition for a community theatre production of Our Town in a few days. I'm not nervous about the audition itself, however it is a cold-reading, something I have minimal experience with. I was wondering if any of you have any tips for nailing a cold-reading, or just having an fantastic audition in general.

1. Any moment you are alone, grab something to read, aloud. And do it. Not just to read it, but to make quick decisions about character and intent.

2. It's easy enought to get a copy of Our Town and KNOW the play pretty well....so it's not really a cold reading.

3. LISTEN to your partner's choices.

4. Keep your face out of the script as much as you can.

5. Make decisions for your scene and play them. Too many people just "read" nicely.

6. Don't sweat it if you stumble on a word or two, nor if you mispronounce a word. It's happens.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Thank you so much! I have read the play a view times, I'll be sure to read over again and again soon. Looking forward to this audition, but I'm feeling the pressure to do well....

And I realize this might be too late but any pressure is coming from you. Remember, that the director WANTS you to be wonderful. She would love nothing more that when you walk out of the audition room to say, "THAT is my Mrs. Gibb".
