Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

When Colin Powell turns off his TV after the final presidential debate, he will have learned everything he is going to learn about the candidates vying to succeed his former boss, George W. Bush. Powell has made it clear that he has been thinking about an endorsement for a long time but wanted to hear more from the candidates before making his choice. It now seems beyond doubt that Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama and thereby hammer the final nail in the coffin of the Republican campaign to hold onto the White House.

The recent ugliness of the McCain-Palin rally audiences cannot be lost on Colin Powell. And Powell is not one to ignore a 14 point lead in a New York Times poll. But most important for Powell and the press will be his explicit rejection of the Bush-McCain approach to Iraq, Iran and the rest of the world.

Powell's endorsement will be perfectly timed to dominate a news cycle or two. It will give Obama the one thing he still needs more of--credibility as Commander-In-Chief. And Sarah Palin's speechwriters will be hard pressed to come up with a condescending quip about it.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Screw Colin Powell. Would Obama want an endorsement from that war criminal?

Yeah, he probably would. Sad.

This was predicted long ago. I hope this vindicates him, he's a good man but guilty as all get out.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

It'll take more than an endorsement of Obama to get the blood off of Colin Powell's hands.

The least Powell (and Rumsfeld and Cheney and Rice and Bush) can do is blow his/their brains out.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

I agree with you Roscoe but it will give Obama even more credibility. Bush and Co. really fu*&ed over Powell. This will help Obama and we should not reject it. The way I see it, hold your nose and applaud Powell for doing this. Love him or hate him, it helps Obama out BIG TIME!

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Why can't Powell endorse McCain? If Powell could collaborate with Bush & Co, what's stopping him from endorsing the man who would simply continue Bush & Co's policies?

In other words, if Powell was a spineless douchebag who willingly collaborated with EVIL in the past, how seriously am I supposed to take his sudden conversion?

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

The tragedy of Colin Powell's life is Shakespearean in its scope: He was trained as a soldier, and he became, quite possibly, America's most distinguished African-American member of the military. He was admired and applauded by black and white, Republican and Democratic as a man of valor and integrity.

He could easily have been America's first black president.

When he appeared before the United Nations making the case for war in Iraq, he was operating as a "good soldier" in service to his commander-in-chief. You may hate the military, but that is what they are trained to do, and, remember, Colin Powell was among the greatest military men of this century.

Bush and Cheney lied to the media. They lied to the American public. They lied to Powell and ordered him to tell those lies to the world. I believe he thought they were true when he went to the UN. Whether he did or not is his tragedy, because it cost the lives of soldiers and civilians, and it cost him his reputation.

So call him a "spineless douchebag" who "willingly collaborated with evil," but know that phrase is just as true (and just as false) for the media and Congress and 80% of Americans.

Have compassion for a once-great soldier, for in Colin Powell's tragedy lies America's tragedy.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

And what has this great American done since finding out that he has been lied to and manipulated? Has he travelled the world denouncing these villains in the strongest possible terms? Has he led protest marches? Has he done anything at all?

He was only following orders. Where have we heard that before? And it doesn't let him off the hook. There's blood on those hands, and it will never be washed off.

Screw Colin Powell.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Roscoe, you sound like a lunatic. This caricature you have of Bush & Co as "EVIL" black-hearted baby-eating monsters from the depths of Hell is laughable at best but really just plain scary. That kind of hatred is just unhealthy, dude.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

It's not easy for anyone to discover that they were lied to by their boss, their commander, their idol or their mentor- Powell got lied to by all of them in one.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

I'm 100% with Roscoe on this.

Powell is a nonentity, war criminal and an Uncle Tom.

Had he been white he would have been as forgotten as "Stormin" Norman Schwartzkopf.

Obama doesn't need him one bit.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Who cares if he's ready or not? Why is this news? It's like almost a story, but not quite.

Endorse him, or don't Colin - just announce it when you've made up your mind.

What has he done to make amends?

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Put me in the PJ and Joe column on this one.

I tend to believe Powell, and his reputation, was used by Bush and especially Cheney.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Colin Powell was the only respected face that the Bush administration could use in their case for war. Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld all essentially raped Powell's legacy and achievements in the pursuit of their ill-conceived war.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

Powell endorsing Obama would be big news, and my guess is that the Obama campaign is sitting on it, waiting for what they consider the right moment to release it.

re: Colin Powell Is Ready To Endorse Obama

It's time. I don't think the eve of the election holds much weight -- it could look like too little too late. We need it in the next 5 days or so to resonate bigtime, though it will always be a bonus. A photo op would do a lot, too.

By the way, per Paljoey's comment: a most interesting take on Powell as a tragic character is in David Hare's STUFF HAPPENS. He emerges the most complext player.
