Posted: 8/21/04 at 6:52pmI have so many other battles to fight in this world, I can't waste my energy on how people want to refer to me. I'm also short and overweight. I have all kinds of strikes against me (although the overweight is my fault).

I think what you meant to say was that -
"yeah I totally have no idea about minoritys I only have a step mother of African descent ,two homosexual cousins a homosexual aunt oh and i'm a confidant to homosexual men with two younger half siblings that share different places of descent which causes a skin tone unlike mine nor my African Stepmother."

JeffG - I think you're forgetting that different people have different preferences when it comes to the term they use. Certainly in public speaking, African-American is the common term. And maybe in everyday interactions, some black people prefer that as well -- I've very rarely met such people myself. All of my friends prefer the term black, even when used by an 'outsider'. It's fair to say that most people here will go by their personal experiences: if so far, all their black friends prefer the term black, that's what they're going to use. I hate guessing, so often I ask people straight out how they want to be referred to. However, as no one in the thread was using the term 'black' in a derogatory way, I'm not sure why it's such a big deal. It's the intent that matters most, and no one was being mean or racist, as far as I could tell.

Posted: 8/21/04 at 9:07pmHey Sunshine, if your little comment was meant to be directed towards me let me remind you again that perceptions are everything. What may not seem positive to you, or those of your mindset, is not necessarily felt the same by others. And what may be thought of as unlikable to you can be veiwed as adorable by others. Life's crazy like that.

Posted: 8/21/04 at 10:25pmI'm completely for colour-blind casting, except maybe in the case where the ethnicity of the character is important (ie. it wouldn't really make sense to have a non-Asian women playing Kim in Miss Saigon, or to have a white Caroline in Caroline or Change). The problem right now is that, when a character's race isn't important, the role usually played by a white actor.

No African-American I've ever been friends with has had a problem with being called black. Not to mention that not all blacks in this country are of African ancestry.
And you may refer to me as a Sephardi-Ashkenazi-Israeli-American, thank you very much. :)

Political correctness when it comes to races annoy me.
I've never met a black person who called themselves an African American, a white person who has called themselves a Caucasian.
I just consider it pompous P.C'ness.
