*sigh* I REALLY didn't have 'tsk-tsk' in my head. What I thought was 'how the hell has what's been done not worked?'

And yes, I'm aware that my 'hands off' approach is exactly the problem - and the very succinct answer to 'how has what's been done not worked'. It is precisely because of some people's lack of involvement that it hasn't worked - and I admit I'm one of them.

Did you know that since W took office, researchers won't even submit grant proposals that include the phrase "gay men" and they wouldn't dream of even trying to get funding for research into anal sex? At this time, there should be all sorts of scientists working in the field of anal microbicides, a very tricky concept that could actually bring real change to the world of sexual health.

Did you know that agencies that get government health funding in any area are told that they can not "promote" gay sex or homosexuality (and by "promote" they mean hold in any sort of positive light) even in programs that do not receive direct funding from the government?

It's true. Obviously, some crafty health educators find ways. But still. This is the times we live in.

ETA Even at the last International AIDS Conference held in Toronto, the phrase "gay men" was never uttered by fabulous, involved, deeply committed keynote speakers Bills Gates and Clinton. Can you imagine? The group still disproportionately effected by the epidemic is rendered invisible, because it's a political hot potato.

Not to mention that there are certain STDs that are just damn easy to catch. Crabs - which isn't really disease, but you know I mean - comes to mind. I got NGU - Chlamydia's sister from oral sex that didn't result in ejaculation. Twice. You can get syphillis by touching someone, so even if you're just rolling around naked in the dark with someone without moving to actual sex it's still possible to catch things.
