I know this is a different country, but my school is in receipt of government funds but can still get rid of people it doesn't like.

As long as everybody agrees that it's okay for a privately funded organization to kick people out for being Christian, I guess I have no problem with it.

Well.....I think there are federal laws that prohibit discrimination because of sex, race, or religion....but not sexual orientation.

One of the funniest (or do I mean saddest?) things in the world to me is conservatives--be they religious, political, or both--trying to take over the language of the oppressed.

People who object to fundamentalists' prejudices are "intolerant."

Next I imagine the kids who weren't kicked out of the school will be called "survivors."

pj, i would say it to anyone.

there are too many religious, faith and spirituality options out there for someone to get hung up on why this one won't do things that i want them to. don't like it? find one that does. i guarantee it's out there. but don't come to me and cry because the institution with which you choose to align yourself is really not that into you.

jerby, if you were a part of a church that openly discriminated against former texans, would you continue to be a part of that church? or would you find a place that was accepting of former texans.

let's face it, it's not like someone wakes up one day and says, "my goodness the catholic church as an institution is not fond of me swallowing swords! how could i have never known this? why was it not made more clear to me when i sold my soul to join up? i love the church with all my heart even though it hates me...or at least that part of me that likes other men which happens to be a rather inegral part of who i am. if only there was a church that was more accepting of who i am, but alas there is no church but the catholic church."

please. you don't choose who you are, but you do choose where you practice your faith. i'm sure if people started leaving the church in droves, that it might just find that c*cks*cking was not just for priests after all.

I don't entirely disagree, Papa, but what you're leaving out is that most people are raised in their faiths. They are Catholics, for example, before they are sexual beings (note how I didn't say "choose to be gay"). By that point, you've had 10, 11, 12 years of church, which may well be important to you, before you are dealing with issues of gay sex or premarital sex, or what have you. (And doesn't it seem, at the end of the day, that the conflict with religious instutions always comes down to sex?)

As an adult, yes, you're free to leave. And many do.

But I'm not convinced that churches should be the one organization immune to the concept of change from within.

nah, i think we'll just keep shooting wolves for fun and enjoying our time in the opposition as the democrats get to take full and entire responsibility for everything for a while. can't blame anybody else - oh who'm i kidding - the left has almost total control of the gov't. maybe when we come back to power we'll take ditzy wolf loving bimbos and sell the to the highest bidders. probably could get at least $20 bucks for some of those lunachicks.

i see this as more of a fundamental thing, reg. more akin to martin luther - ironically for this thread - breaking out.

I'm just surprised to see this is a Lutheran school, because (at least around here) we have many gay and lesbian Lutheran clergy. Unless of course, it's not ELCA Lutheran, but Missouri Synod Lutheran, which is much more conservative most of its beliefs.

And Kel--not that I'm agreeing with what the school did---but did you, and the other teacher have to sign a morality clause when you were hired? Something that allowed them to fire you if you didn't set a good moral example? It tends to be pretty common fare for teachers...even in public school districts. I happen to know the first person in my district to challenge the morality clause by having twins when she was unmarried. In her case, the public school decided to let her keep her job, but it was quite the scandal for a while.

Wendy, we did have to sign the clause which was ambiguous at best because it says, "anything that the church does not uphold" or something like that. The main complaint that I had was that she didn't even get time to get a new job and she was only 2 months along. We were a month apart so I took it pretty hard that she was gone that quickly. We've stayed close and her son is adorable. I just think that its nuts that they just kicked her to the curb like that.

I think it would be smart for gay people to go to a gay friendly church, but this is often from which gay friendly churches begin. Until there are gay friendly Catholic churches, people who are gay and choose to remain Catholic must make the choice to put up with some of the BS or not. Clearly, some people believe in a great deal of the Catholic traditions despite not agreeing on this issue just as they are Catholics who disagree about birth control or a woman's right to choose.

I also wish that my gay friendly straight friends would or would have also chosen to go to gay friendly churches or at least distance themself from that issue should they truly feel they must go to THAT church. But sadly, some of them have gone from gay friendly to nongay friendly just because THAT pastor has somehow brainwashed them into believing that gay people are sinners who don't deserve equal rights. Even though they know...er...knew better.

So people go to work for Christian organizations, and have babies out of wedlock, and get all surprised when they lose their jobs?
