Courts Weigh Legality of Unpaid Internships

I was recently at a show and struck up conversation with the young man sitting next to me. He was telling me about how he moved from the West coast because he got a 60-hour-a-week position with a company that is well-known in the New York theatre community. He then told me that he was living in a hostel in the heights using money from student loans because he was completely uncompensated, only receiving a Metrocard to get to and from work every day. I just don't understand how there are not regulations that prevent things like this.

I used to be a teacher and I did student teaching for a semester which was unpaid. But I got 12 college credits for it.

I've seen Off-Broadway Productions looking for stage managers and offering a Metrocard as compensation. These type of things pray on people needing experience.
