Well this is why I agree with the person saying the movie is unfocused... there isn't really a storyline.
It's basically just a series of events within La that happen, all dealing with racism.
There is Don Cheadle, who is a like FBI detective or something who has a case and his mom bugging him about his brother.
There is Terrence who is a very "white" black guy who is a director or something and stuggles with racism and himself always trying to be the better man and ignore it. Then his wife who is mad he's like that.
There is a hispanic locksmith who deals with his fmaily and trying to have them safe, meanwhile he deals with the racism of noone seeming to trust him.
Then there is ludacris and some other guy (forget name) who are a duo of blacks who somewhat live up to stereotypes... and are involved with some bad things.
There is Brandon Frasier who is some official and his wife, Sandra Bullock who is a racist, typical suburban white women.
There is a Persian family who is trying nto start a business and deals with racism over people thinking they are ARab.
2 cops, Ryan Phillip and another guy... the other being very racist, while Ryans problem with racism.
There is no storyline, it's just lil clips of each of their lives, all concidentily at a climax and in some ways linking with one another.
That's what it is about, it's just clips of all their lives within this few days (i think probably about that time) of time and what happens.
It is in effect just showing you all the racism that happens everyday and how people are effected by it.
Anyway, hope that helps... it's just a confusing, weaving story of many peoples live all in one city, that's it.

np, it really doesn't have a storyline, plus I didn't wanna go into detail (why i was a bit vague) so I didn't spoil anything.
I really do suggest people see this (especially whoever liked Ragtime) because it is a great movie and I felt they did a terrific job.

Why does that make you suspicious? And I really enjoyed Crash. I thought it was provoking and intelligent and very real.
And a movie can be focussed while having more than one story line. Some things stretched my limits of disbelief suspension, sure, but I got past that the further the movie pulled me in.

I don't know. I think it's strange that the professors and students deny racism when it's right in front of them yet applaud a film that addresses it. Maybe they like distance?

Examples of good films that have multiple storylines but are focused include (imho, of course) The Hours, Far From Heaven, Traffic, and Adaptation. A bad example is The Constant Gardener as its constant shifts in narrative prevented me from really getting to know the characters or at least understanding which aspects of them were real.

Yes, that is true... but in the sense of focused, as having a consistent storyline, I don't think this really has one. It's just like a few clips of peoples lives.
I personally think it is focused enough, yet it's very different in what in most movies I feel means "focused". So when someone in a previous reply said that it wasn't foxused and they didn't like it... I could see what they meant, in a way.
I loved the movie personally and thought it was done very well, but it was, in a sense, unfocused.

I didn't find the movie to be too unfocused. I just think the structure of the film is unconventional. It relies on the theme to tell the stories instead of the story to give a theme. I see a very logical connection and focus to the events of the film.
I'll admit, I feel as though I'm overlooking at least something, because I recall thinking it had its share of flaws while watching, they're escaping me now though.
I really did enjoy it though.

Exactly, you said it better than me...
I tried to say it with the...
"I personally think it is focused enough, yet it's very different in what in most movies I feel means "focused"."
I meant it's not conventional, as you said. They use the theme to show the story, rather than the other way around. It's not traditionally how people think a movie that is focused should be. They werne't focused on a storyline, but the theme.
So, yea, I thought it was fine, just not focused in the way most might feel they think the word means.

Its an amazing movie that has a lot of depth. And though I rarely use foul language, that movie has my favorite use of the F word.
"well f you very much!"
haha...
And I think its good, because it gets me thinking! And I respect a movie that can do such a thing.

Aigoo, you liked the shooting scene? I thought it was a total cop-out and a violation of the wannabe realism of the rest of the film. And can there be too much racism in a movie about racism? It just felt like the director was hitting us with it in every single scene of every single storyline, and there were just too many of them. All these intersecting tales, all driven by that one thing. In the end, it was more strident than persuasive.
The acting and the moments that actually seemed insightful and true almost saved this movie, but not quite. Give me "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" any day.

Posted: 10/11/05 at 11:40amI saw this last night, and I loved it. I got really involved in it, and I haven't done that with a movie for a long while. I cared for everyone in the movie, because they all had more than one dimension, and I think that is a credit to the director being able to show that. sure, it's flawed in some ways, and the ending sort of tried to immediatly wrap everything up, but I don't think it was a cop out at all. I hope that it is viewed by many people in my whitebred home town.

This movie is excellent!
I agree that it's one of the best, most thought provoking films that's come out this year.
