What? Were they performing "buggery" right on deck? It sounds like someone knew it was a gay cruise and was keeping a watchful eye out to get someone in trouble for something.

Hope they don't have to spend much longer in jail & I think the group should boycott that port along with any others who will not welcome all passengers. I'm sure there are enough ports that will welcome them.

If they were having sex on the deck, I hardly see how this is news. Public sex is against the law in the US as well. There are a few exceptions where the city turns a blind eye such as the Folsom Street Fair and New Orleans Mardis Gras, but it's not an uncommon or unusual law. I remember London altered the law a bit allowing sex in public areas, but only if you cannot be seen by others. Which is really sort of the same thing, right?

Sorry, if the were having sex on the deck and were able to be seen then they deserve to be arrested. When travelling abroad, you obey the laws of the land. Even if it is anti-gay law. Don't like the laws? Then don't travel there. Plain and simple.

As the Mardi Gras episodes of COPS so vividly prove, New Orleans police are no longer turning a blind eye to this sort of stuff. Women exposing their breasts are warned to cover up and anyone showing downstairs is arrested.

The charges have been reduced from "buggery" to "indecent exposure" because the charge would "take too long to expedite"--which probably means there was no proof. It also means it may very well have been a false charge by a local homophobe.

The article below has mug shots of the two guys--but it also has a picture of the police at the dock--and the photo shows that it is impossible to see inside the windows to the cabins.

Atlantis is going to find it difficult to continue to book cruises that stop in homophobic countries, not only in the Caribbean--they also have a Baltic cruise heading to St. Petersburg this summer, just in time for the new anti-gay laws to take effect. The Russian LGBT community is asking all travelers gay and straight to stay away.

I went tubing in Dominica while on a Princess cruise this past Christmas...come to think of it, it was pretty buggy.

What gay men could do in this situation is educate themselves about which countries don't exactly offer an open smile on a friendly shore and avoid accordingly, rather than wait for Atlantis to wake up and smell the coffee.

The men entered a guilty plea and paid a $900 fine.

The president of Atlantis Events released this statement:

===

Please accept my apology for the late post, we have been at sea for the past 18 hours with limited internet access.

We appreciate the comments on this board regarding the incident in Dominica yesterday, but would sincerely ask that most of you get the facts correct before condemning Atlantis or Dominica for what happened. Here are the facts:

Yesterday morning around 9:30 am two of our guests were seen engaging in a sexual act outdoors on their balcony in full public view of the port and town. Not only did many of the residents witness the act, several of our guests saw this incident as well. The local authorities responded to a complaint by several residents. The two gentlemen were arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public indecency and detained overnight. They appeared in front of the local magistrate this morning, paid a small fine, and were released in full.

Please understand that the complaint and subsequent arrests had nothing to do with the guests’ sexual orientation, nor was any “anti-gay” law invoked. These guests were engaged in behavior that is inappropriate in any port of call, or major city for that matter.

The guests were never left on their own. We had both representatives from Atlantis and Celebrity cruises with them at all times during their ordeal and had our local representatives look after them last night. Furthermore, we worked closely with the US Embassy in Barbados to assure that their safety was always being monitored.

Atlantis had 2000 guests in port yesterday in Dominica and most of them had an outstanding time visiting the country. Celebrity Cruises has been extremely supportive, working with Atlantis to insure these guests’ safety and security despite their detention in Dominica. We commend them for their unwavering support through this incident.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Rich Campbell
President, Atlantis Events, Inc

Yeah, I didn't want to jump on the anti-gay bandwagon too soon. I've had friends who regaled stories of their Atlantis cruises and I wasn't convinced this was just a case of targeting gays. Still, I don't understand the concept of going on a gay cruise to a famously anti-gay country.

I would never go to Jamaica and let anyone know why if I find out they're thinking of going.

If you want a very gay friendly island, man....go to Curacao. We love it there!

That was one of the ports on my cruise earlier this year. Very lovely country. I definitely recommend the Hato Caves if you ever go. I also enjoyed our stops in Aruba (the butterfly farm was a lovely stop) and Bonaire. All three countries are rather gay-friendly to my understanding.

Looking at those pictures I tend to think it could possibly be Photoshopped. The railing seems in pretty good focus as well as the curtains in the window, but the top's head and shoulders seem very soft focus. Also the dark line at the top of the rail seems almost drawn.
