re: cuchi cuchi! meets carne

Ooh... I might have to come back and see that. I remember I saw a flyer for the show.

Where exactly is she performing?

(and Jose, he might've had a big meat.)

I adore Charo and who is that handsome hunk with her?

I love Charo! I went to see her in Hawaii about 12 years ago and got this picture taken with her after her show. She was lovely. And very talented. :)

I too went to see her in Waikiki and sat ringside. I have a picture with her too, and I don't care what it cost. It completes me.

Her home was on Kauai and if you talked to the locals about her, no one had a single even tiny semi-nasty or snide thing to say. Period.

Have fun. She's a blast.

As for the age thing, she has said that Cugat 'found' her when she was 14. In the 70s she went in front of a judge and said that she had no birth certificate and that her baptism certificate was destroyed in a fire. She then told the judge that she had been born on such-and-such a date and bam, the judge ruled she was 26.

Smart cookie.

Her nose has gotten seriously scary. I couldn't watch Surreal Life because her nose freaked me out.

My aunt used to call her Churro! I kept telling her that she wasn't something we would eat. :)

re: cuchi cuchi! meets carne

I remember her playing guitar on the Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas shows--she was really good.

The ditzy routine seems similar to what Carmen Miranda went through: a silly persona that nearly obliterated the rest of her talent and personality.

I'm glad she's still around--can't wait to hear about the performance, Beav!

Charo is two things I love in one person: part kitschy, quirky bimbette, part brilliant musician and performer. Those who only know her as an English-murdering 70's TV throwback are missing out on a truly astounding musical talent. Just pick up a CD of hers and be amazed. She has been at the top of my "People I want to meet" list for years.

Viva Charo!
