By the way - you aren't supposed to compromise your health so if you get serious migraines or feel faint I think God will forgive you. I'm no Rabbi but I beleive there are even laws saying that if you're breastfeeding or in poor health you are REQUIRED to eat, no? Updated On: 10/13/05 at 12:11 AM

Look, this is how I manage to get through the fasting that we Catholics must observe on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday: Just keep thinking of the bloodiest moments of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. I don't know if it'll work for you, but it sure makes me lose my appetite.

But I like to try fasting - until I forget and eat...

My people suffered for enough years. If you ask me, the rest of the world should be fasting.

I usually don't because I get sick. I did it two years ago, as I spent the entire day at my temple going to and leading services... I basically HAD to. I'm trying to this year, though.

I'm close enough to send some your way! Or, at the very least, eat something right in front of you! Aren't you just dying for a bagel now? Or chocolate chip cookies? Or chicken?

(And might I mention that Beka531 is coming out tomorrow - this Jewish gal is lying to her parents, blowing off temple and hanging out with Internet strangers behind her parents' backs AND EATING WITH US on the Jewish day of atonement. Bad karma?)

For those who don't understand the reasoning behind the fast...this is my take on it based on what I've been told.

Rosh Hashana (New Year) - God decides your standing in this world for the following year... your health, your financial situation, your love life, EVERYTHING.

Between then and Yom Kippur you have the chance to attone and reflect on how you can be a better person, thereby offering you a chance to convince God to lessen the decree of what's been decided.

On Yom Kippur the decision is made final, so to speak, so we try to make ourselves as close to resembling angels as possible...therefore the fasting. Cause yeah, angels don't eat. Well, that is at least ONE of the reasons... I'd be happy to hear if this differs from anyone else's reasoning.

I was never given a very explicit explanation, but if I splice togther what I've learned over the years, it's a sort of self-imposed "suffering" sort of thing. Yom Kippur is a day of atonement, not a joyous, celebratory occasion, which is why we don't eat. I was also told that we fast because when we aren't *allowed* to eat, we won't focus on such "trivial" things during services as "ooh, maybe I'll have chicken for lunch." Without the distraction of what we'll eat (despite the fact that our stomachs might be growling and we *want* to eat) we can concentrate on the solemnity of the day at hand.

I've never heard that about angels, but that's really interesting!

Yeah, that's the odd catch to that reason. It's definitely not foolproof, nor does it cover all grounds.

I didn't mean to imply that it's the only reason we fast but it's definitely one of the explanations I was given...ever notice how wearing white is kind of the "thing to do?"
