Sean Penn over Tim Burton?

I'm surprised by that.

No Tim Burton?!

Penn and Gilroy over Burton is absurd.

EDIT: Actually, I take back Penn. I can see that.

Tim Burton doesn't deserve a nomination over the sheer GENIUS of Gilroy's work. MICHAEL CLAYTON is a flawless film. So glad to see he's being remembered.

If I remember correctly, the DGA noms mirror the Oscar noms for Director and Picture 9/10 times. I do not think DIVING BELL will get a best picture nomination, as JUNO or ATONEMENT will take that slot.

The DGA winners mirror the Oscar winners (perhaps) 9 times out of 10.

I would look for 4 out of the 5 directors here to get Oscar nods. That's typical. Once in a while it's 5 for 5.

They're never lower than 3 out of 5, though.

Usually when the directors don't line up, it's pretty obvious.

Like last year. Everyone knew that although Condon was DGA nommed for DREAMGIRLS, he wouldn't get the Oscar slot.

So...does everyone agree this means Sweeney's chances for a best picture nom are doomed?

"Everyone" knew Condon wouldn't get an Oscar nod?

Hmm...

But he was in "everyone's" Overlooked Column in the media when the nominations came out.

I'm not sure which "everyone" you're talking about.

"So...does everyone agree this means Sweeney's chances for a best picture nom are doomed?"

Hell, no! Far stranger things have happened with greater odds stacked against them than Sweeney.

But I really don't think it's likely, IMO. If it gets a Best Pic nomination, it would be a surprise to me.

EDIT: My guess is you'll see "Atonement" get in before "Sweeney."

Burton should be there from my biased opinion.

I have a feeling SWEENEY TODD will only be seeing design awards. No Picture, Director, Writer, Actor, Actress, Supportings...just the designs.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Sweeney's BP nom chances aren't doomed, but they are lessened.

I wasn't in love with this film, but I am thrilled for PTA!

Well, if it's any consolation, Capn, (and it's not much), Sweeney is in the "final seven" for a Makeup Oscar nod. Three of the seven on their short list will get nominated.

Oooooooooooohhhh!

I think Depp will get a nod- with a pretty decent chance of winning, with the odds increasing the more nominations they do not get.

I think Depp will get nominated too, but he'll be hard pressed to beat Daniel Day-Lewis.

I do agree that the less nominations the film gets, the more chances he'd have of winning. It's strange how that works sometimes. It has to do with the Academy thinking they need to honor the film "some way."

But honestly, I think they'll be happy giving it a few technical awards.

I fully expect it to win 2 or 3 of the following: Sound, Art Direction, Costumes and Makeup.

If they've got their hearts set on Day-Lewis, look for them to give Sweeney a few more technical nods. They could get all 4 of the ones I mentioned.

b12: Maybe you're right, perhaps I just thought it was obvious. I thought it was pretty clear that Condon would be left out to make way for Greengrass.

SWEENEY TODD will not get nominated for Best Picture. No way.

Johnny Depp has a chance, but only because of lack of competition. Daniel Day Lewis, George Clooney are locks. Viggo Mortensen is likely. That leaves Emile Hirsch (who I'd nominate), Ryan Gosling (no thanks), Johnny Depp, James McAvoy, of even Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones.

I would give it to Jones for ELAH over Depp in a heartbeat.

IT's always fun to do this when you haven't seen hardly any of the films so....

There is no way that the academy will make DD Lewis or George Clooney two-time Oscar winners. Tommy Lee Jones would be the only other possible winner. I think Depp would win that fight, especially as the press built up.

I hated Emile Hirsch. Oscar? No way.

And good Lord, Joe, have you SEEN There Will Be Blood? Day-Lewis has it. The man is utterly, frighteningly brilliant. Updated On: 1/8/08 at 02:29 PM

Nope. As I said, it's always easier when you HAVEN'T seen the movies. On that list, I've only seen Sweeney.

I thought Emile Hirsch was excellent, and is highly deserving of a nomination.

Daniel Day Lewis will win the Oscar. There's no question about that. He will ABSOLUTELY become a 2-time Oscar winner.

As of now, this would be where I'd place the films in contention...the first 5, of course, being the nominees for best picture.

1. No Country for Old Men
2. There Will Be Blood
3. Into the Wild
4. Michael Clayton
5. Juno
6. Atonement
7. American Gangster
8. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
9. Hairspray
10. Sweeney Todd
11. 3:10 to Yuma
12. Zodiac
13. The Kite Runner

"There is no way that the academy will make DD Lewis or George Clooney two-time Oscar winners"

It seems to me that Clooney has become a Hollywood 'hero' - and they like to reward their own.

And if Hanks can get two actor nods (I won't even discuss Nicholson's track-record,) then Day-Lewis - regarded as one of the best ever, can certainly get their approval.

DDL is the clear frontrunner. I really doubt anyone can touch him.
