Wait--I thought it said in the credits that Amy Adams did her own singing?
Not Amy, jerby, Marion.
Even though Marion is a frunt-runner undeniably, the non-singing is a drawback for voters when judging a performance like this.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Jamie Foxx is the only performer to win an Oscar for a dubbed (singing) role.
All others nominated (Deborah Kerr twice, Jessica Lange, etc.) have lost. And some stellar performances that were also dubbed like Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood weren't even nominated.
It also affected the outcome (dubbed, although non-singing) of Linda Blair's odds-on-favorite win. She didn't. And that is suggested by most as to the reason why. When the "scandal" broke right before the voting that another Oscar-winner Mercedes McCambridge had provided the "devil voice."
Hmmm...I didnt know that there was a backlash against Blair...McCambridge was in the credits...what did people think she did? Was her credit added after? I love more Exorcist trivia!
She did win the GG just before losing the AA...but Tatum was in the lead category.
That said, I dont think she was much competition that year for Tatum who actually WAS a lead...was it that much of a surprise?
Also, like Foxx, Marion played a well known singer...a non-dubbed vocal would be interesting, but not authentic. I think people will forgive her not attempting a Piaf impression. I think it's a bit different than the actor's who didnt sing because they couldnt. I wonder if she'll sing in Nine.
b12b: It's completely different. It's one thing to be expected to sing in a MUSICAL.
When you're in a film playing a legend, it would only be appropriate to use the original material. Audrey Hepburn being dubbed in MY FAIR LADY is completely and utterly different from Cotillard lipsynching to the real Edith Piaf.
that's what I said.
Woah, guys. Do you your homework first before you lash out!
There have been plenty of other nominees (like Susan Hayward in "With a Song in My Heart" and Jessica Lange in "Sweet Dreams") who have been nominated for playing singers DUBBED by the original recording artist's performances.
They didn't win. And the dubbing was always mentioned as a reason or a handicap.
Doodle---I'm shocked you of all people don't know about this Exorcist scandal!
Yes, Linda Blair was the favorite to win the Oscar. She won the Golden Globe for it too. Then the "scandal" broke when Mercedes McCambridge sued Warner Bros. for leaving her out of the credits for doing the voice. They recalled all the prints that were still in release and changed the credits to include her. They were accused of trying to cover it up, to help Blair win the award.
All of this happened while the voting ballots were out, and it was cited in the media as the primary reason why she didn't win.
Now that's a shame!
I wouldnt lash out at you, ya know...I was just stating an opinion about those you mentioned.
I LOVE Jessica Lange, but she was not a big contender that year against Streep, Goldberg and especially Page. I'm FAR too young to know what happened the year Susan was nom'd for playing Froman
I know what you mean, however, but I do think it's a bit different if it's a musical or a biopic.
I remember that McCambridge got credit later, but I thought it was before the film came out...and I thought once Tatum was put in the supporting category, she was the front runner. Of course, I was FAR too young in 1973 to remember
