...and it's not like they just gave it to Day-Lewis last year. Hardly back-to-back. He won his first Oscar in 1989. That's 18 years ago!
I think you'll see both him and Julie Christie become two time winners.
And her first win was 42 years ago! His? 18.
I think that's kinda cool, actually.

I have no objectivity with Daniel - I want him to win anything just for the chance to see him and hear him speak
Jerby - you didn't like Christie? The press has been phenomenal about her.
Why an "ugh" for the great Julie Christie?
I dunno. There were so many films this year that deserve nominations over the late-period release date movies it just proves that people are just lazy and popularity-obsessed. I love Ryan Gosling, but if his gallery of tics in the thoroughly irritating LARS & THE REAL GIRL is nomination-worthy acting, I'm Anna Magnani.
Jerby, you didn't like Julie Christie?
She gave probably the most heart-breaking performance I have ever seen. I will never again be able to watch another actor play a character with Alzheimer's and be convinced. She was that amazing. AWAY FROM HER just might be the saddest movie I have ever seen, at least to me, personally.
And, regarding Depp, I still think it's highly likely he'll get a nod. The Academy loves him.
I was bored by her and she seemed so plastic. I dunno. Maybe, well obviously, not my cup of tea.
I was much more thrilled by Cotillard. And I have a feeling, just from commercials, that I will fall in love with Page.
DDL is definitely deserving and likely to win a second Oscar. And his chances are heightened as he was "supposed" to win for Gangs of New York. And he's STUNNING in TWBB. Stunning.
I'm all for Julie Christie winning, but my vote would go to Cotillard. My favorite female leading performances in AGES.

I've been afraid to see the Christie piece. Alzheimers is something we've been dealing with quite a bit the last few years (and still are,) and the clips I've seen are devastating.
Then DG, I would recommend not seeing the movie. It's gorgeously made and acted. But it is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking.
I've dealt with Alzheimer's, but not with someone I'm incredibly close to. If I had, it probably would have taken me a while to get over the sadness of the film.
It's an odd little film. I mean, everything about it is beautiful and haunting. But would I recommend it? I suppose it depends on the person I was talking to, because it'll break your heart. I was holding back tears for a great deal of the film, and then I just couldn't anymore and sobbed so hard.
I guess it's so powerful because it is so incredibly honest and real. But that can also make it hard to watch.
I would say No Country For Old Men will win best picture.

You WILL fall in love with Ellen Page - but I don't see the academy giving Best Actress to a 20 year old.
I can't beleive they predict Jennifer Garner as a Supporting nomination. I mean, she was fine... but an Oscar???
I definitely think Garner's work is deserving of a nod. Not a win, but certainly a nomination.
I agree, Priest. I don't know why she's been ignored.
I too think Jennifer Garner is deserving of a nomination. Along with another actress who is being ignored this year by all the awards and critics: Marissa Tomei for BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD.
I'm actually pretty disappointed that Lumet was ignored by the DGA, many people have said that this might as well be his best film to date. Oh well.
Sad to see Tim Burton or Ben Affleck weren't nominated.
I hope Burton is remembered come Oscar time.
I think Julie Christie has Oscar #2 written all over her face. She is one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood (probably because of her anti-Hollywood stance) and she picks her projects very carefully. I hated AWAY FROM HER only because it depressed me to no end, but Christie's performance is definitely worthy of the award although it is young talented Ellen Page I am rooting for.
Ellen Page is EXCELLENT. But I can't believe she will probably get nominated over Helena Bonham Carter. Carter's work is underrated in Sweeney.
They wouldn't give it to a 20-year-old?
They've given it to two 22-year-olds. Janet Gaynor (the first winner) and Marlee Matlin, the youngest so far in that category.
See, I absolutely loved Bonham Carter, but I would give Ellen Page a nod over her.
This is such a strong year for females.
I wouldn't mind seeing Carter, Christie, Coltillard, Page, Adams or Linney winning.
And then there's Knightley, Blanchett and Russell on top of them.
I LOVED Carter's performance but I would actually nominate her over Marion Cotillard, Angelina Jolie, Amy Adams, Laura Linney, Keira Nightley, or Cate Blanchett (I think those are all the names being thrown around for a nomination), not Page or Christie.
I don't think Page will win. She is too young, is starring in a quirky original comedy, and competing in the LEADING actress category--not the supporting category where I feel the Academy is more likely to give the award to young actresses.
Then there's the fact she is competing against Christie and Cotillard. Both Kate Winslet and Will Smith have said that the best way to get an Oscar is if you're playing 1. A person with a mental problem, and 2. A person who actually lived. Well, Christie is playing one, Cotillard is playing the other. There are your two likely winners.
The Oscar for Best Actress will be between Julie Christie & Marion Coltillard.
I think it's more of the role getting Page all the buzz and nominations, more-so than her performance. Her performance is great, but her material and character she had to work are VERY strong.
There's no way she's as seasoned of an actress yet like Carter or the other females who will be nominated.

It's very rare that a comedic performance wins in the leading categories.
So if you put that together with Page's age, and her lack of a mile-long resume, the Academy will very likely decide the nomination is recognition enough.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN will win Best Picture.
The Coens will win Best Director.
Daniel Day Lewis will win Best Actor.
Best Actress is between Cotillard and Christie.
Javier Bardem will win Best Supporting Actor.
Supporting Actress is between Amy Ryan and Cate Blanchett. Maybe Tilda Swinton.
JUNO will win Original Screenplay.
NO COUNTRY... will win Adapted Screenplay.
RATATOUILLE will win Animated.
Docu is between SICKO and NO END IN SIGHT
Editing will go to NO COUNTRY

I cannot understand how Amy Adams could get a nomination of Helena Boham Carter.
I agree with everything Munk said regarding the winners, although I think that Amy Ryan has it in the bag and that Collitard will win Best Actress.
The Oscars LOVE roles that sing. In recent years: J. Hudson, R. Witherspoon, J. Fox, C. Zeta Jones...
Any even though she didn't do her own singing, her acting was brilliant.
Christie has the lead, though.
Amy Ryan has the disadvantage of being unknown.
Cate Blanchett will not win her second Oscar for a film no one saw, so Tilda Swinton has the real edge here.
Christie is the one to beat in the Leading actress category. The role is a bit too quiet, whereas Cotillard's larger-than-life performance is the kind of Oscar bait that tends to win awards. I say they are head-to-head with Christie having the edge right now.
Amy Ryan is not a lock yet, she may get the award but I wouldn't count out Blanchett.
Munk's list seems pretty accurate.
"Any even though she didn't do her own singing, her acting was brilliant."
Historically that counts against her in the Academy's eyes, big-time.
