The fourth quarter kicks off with lots of spiffed up titles debuting on BD. Personally I'm not one to double dip for a replacement unless it's really a special title to me, and none of this month's upgrades fit that category.
But the industry will be rolling out some serious titles on BD this quarter including an upgraded Avatar (with extra footage, extra footage beyond what was included in the re-release (extra-extra footage?) and 45 minutes of completed deleted scenes on top of all that. Still not in 3D yet, so expect at least two more iterations of this movie in the coming year). And a bevy of classic titles which I will post monthly.
As far as new releases go, I'm looking forward to:
The Evil/Twice Dead and The Slumber Party Massacre Collection - these are 2 more titles in the ongoing Roger Corman series. Shout! Factory has done a nearly Criterion-level job with this series and despite the B level of the movies the dvds offer scholarly assessments of their impact and influence on much of what we see today.
The Secret Of Kells - the surprise animated Oscar nominee that no one had ever heard of. I hear it's visually stunning and a true delight.
Splice - word is that this more psychological thriller than monster movie. It got pretty good reviews and I'm intrigued.
Agora - Rachel Weisz in a little seen but highly lauded costume drama set in ancient Egypt.
Please Give - Nicole Holofcener's latest and the best reviewed film of the summer (next to Winter's Bone). She always makes deeply felt dramas, and this one has her usual cast of complex, sometimes unlikable but always real characters.
The Psycho Legacy - an incisive doc about the mother of all horror movies and Hitchcock's masterpiece. Lots of rare interviews and behind the scenes stuff.
Winter's Bone - the other movie of the summer that no one saw but everyone will be talking about if (as is very likely) Jennifer Lawrence gets an Oscar nomination.
The Girl Who Played Fire - the second installment of the trilogy (part 3 comes to dvd in December)
So, what are my fellow BWW'ers looking forward? Besides of course Fred:The Movie.

I'm mostly psyched that Bergman's THE MAGICIAN is hitting DVD in a Criterion version. One of his liveliest and most entertaining films, it deserves to be better known.
And any new DVD of the MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW is cause for happiness. I'll have to check out that ESSENTIAL BUGS BUNNY thing, too.
Secret of Kells IS visually amazing. The script runs a little slow, but it's still refreshing to see something outside of the american animated feature formula.
Well I just thank God that LAKE PLACID 3 is finally coming out. Part 2 ended with such a cliffhanger, I've been dying to know what happens next!!!!
****SPOILER*****
Giant crocodiles eat people and there is a salty old broad somewhere in the cast.
What I read about Agora made it seem like the Johnny Guitar of ancient period pieces. Very interested.
Really want to see Winter's Bone and How To Train Your Dragon (poor Dreamworks, they supposedly make their best animated film to date the same year Toy Story 3 comes out).
Is it just me or is there a lack of horror releases (and re-releases for that matter)? I guess I'll check out The Twilight Zone: Fan Favorites.

Thanks for mentioning WINTER'S BONE, I'd missed that it was on the list. Just put it in my netflix queue.
Hitchcock's PSYCHO will be released on Blu-ray on October 19th. It features a newly created (and presumably optional) 5.1 audio mix.
Saw Winter's Bone in the theater. It's one of the best movies, if not the best movie, I've seen all year.

"Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition" also came out yesterday.

I wanted to see Agora in the the theater but it played for a split second.
WBshop.com releasing 'Pretty Maids All In A Row' on Oct. 12th
Saw Winter's Bone over the weekend. Amazing film. I truly hope Jennifer Lawrence's performance doesn't get lost in the shuffle of the annual flurry of Oscar bait films over the next few months. The girl was astonishing.

One of my local theaters is actually showing Winter's Bone on the big screen next week. $3 a pop. Going.
