Anyone know what the woman with the gorgeous moon beam voice is up to these days? I saw her with the LA Phil last year. Hearing such intelligent readings of the music coupled with that luminous voice was just a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
I would love to catch her in recital with a full orchestra again. Nothing like it.
Anyone know what she's up to? Information on her IMG and Sony Classic sites never seems to be up to date.
Here you go- apparently Christian Arab Easter Songs.
What's Dawn up to?
Thanks, Ms Mangel. Apparently, I just missed her at the Orange County Performing Arts Center performing that same piece! Damn it! The good news is, I also see that she's performing w/ the LA Phil next year.

That's great. does she do much opera any more?
I don't think she does many full opera productions these days. She seems to be quite pre occupied with song cycles and other works that have been especially composed for her. And who wouldn't want to compose for her?
I love Dawn Upshaw--one of the most intelligent and creative singers out there.
But that Seattle Times review reads like a parody:
===
Interspersed with Upshaw's tear-jerking lyricism and the "hyper-accordion" (which sounds like it has been keeping bad company with a Wurlitzer and a Theremin), the ensemble breaks into a kind of Sephardic funk. If that sounds like it would appeal to only an esoteric audience, the truth is that anyone with a pulse must love it.

She recently had a bout with breast cancer.
I grew up with Dawn - she lived four houses down the block. We made our stage debuts together in 1966 at our elementary school's student/parent talent show - each erforming with our parents and siblings. Six year old Dawn, her older sister and parents sang folk songs - very Von Trapp Family-esqe. Seven year old me, my older brother and parents sang show tunes. Eleven years later, we were doing West Side Story in high school - she played Maria, I was Doc. Somewhere, I have an 8-track tape of it!
she makes me cry on Bright Eyed Joy
Find that 8-track, Jon!
I hope her bout is over and she is well.
Anyone else love her Vernon Duke album as much as I do? I also love that she even thought to record a Vernon Duke album, let alone that she did it so beautifully.

She just did a few evenings of concerts with the NY Philharmonic (March 5-
; she filled in after Audra McDonald pulled out a few months ago because of Private Practice filming.
Any idea what kind of program she performed with the NY Phil?

The joys of Google. Here's the replacement announcement.
Edit: now I know one must include a title or the link won't work. That's what I get for being snarky.

I was at the concert. The program was Haydn's Maria Theresia, Berio's Folk Songs and Beethoven's Symphony Number 4. She was in luminous voice and looked gorgeous, as well. The program was conducted by Alan Gilbert, the incoming NY Philharmonic music director...a sign of wonderful things to come.
Edited for clarification. Upshaw sang only the Berio.

She does a lot of work with Osvaldo Golijov these days, one of the most incredible composers I have ever heard.
I had the pleasure of hearing her sing Berrio's Folk Songs with the New York Philharmonic a few weeks ago.
