The top of the crane stretched across the street and fell on a small building on E. 52 St., crushing it.

Small building? I thought they said it was a high rise?

The crane was on top of a high rise that was under construction, and fell off onto smaller buildings around the site (from what I understand).

the building that was crashed was apparntly a 4 story townhome.

Looks like the crane took off a corner of the building across the street from it them destroyed a building two blocks over!

I'm on vacation but it fell around the corner from where I live, right where I walk Miss Holly every night.

My friend was right around the corner when it happened. He called me right after. I hope nobody else is trapped in there.

They just said on NY1 that at least one person is still trapped. Four dead, at least twenty-one injured.
So sad.

I hate those cranes. I hate those high-rises. I want my wonderful low-rise neighborhood back. The housing inspectors are corrupt. I hope they all lose their jobs and draconian anti-development laws are put in place.

this may be the first accident of this magnitude, but dangerous construction accidents have become a regular occurance.

I'm glad you're okay, PJ.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

We seem to have more and more crane disasters here in the city and it's happening with more frequency as time goes by. I think it calls for a thorough investigation into the contracting industry. I mean, really!
Yesterday I noticed for the first time, a large crane a few blocks from where I live. Today, it's gone. I wonder if yesterday's accident had anything to do with that.

I hate this building boom. So much thunderous activity going on in such a small space, and all to build incredibly tall buildings so that rich a-holes will have a place to store their mistresses and whatever the masculine form of mistresses is.
Yeah, judgey. Whatever.
Yes, crane disasters are becoming pretty frequent, and it's getting so that the sides of streets that have construction on them are usually avoided by pedestrians. There used to be a huge crane on top of a high building near Columbus Circle--it sat on the edge (how do they get those things UP there??) of the roof and would sway on windy days. Scary stuff.

I used to try to avoid walking under the scaffolding or other temporary structures on buildings undergoing restoration or repair. Now, it's impossible because almost every street has hazardous areas you'd like to avoid. I'm serious. In the neighborhoods I frequent the most, there are those temporary walkways set up in the street because the sidewalk is closed, new buildings going up, old ones being renovated, etc. I hate it.

nygrli. They bring the cranes up and down in pieces through the elevator shafts before the elevators are installed.
With the big building boom after 9/11 the city has been lax in checking the various scaffoldings and cranes. I will bet anything that after this disaster there will be a huge crack down!

It's a sign that this constant building up needs to STOP.

I am listening to NY1's live audiostream now with the Mayor and a woman who I didn't catch who she was but is talking about the accident and what they are doing now.

A similar thing, but on a much smaller scale, happened in my neighborhood here in Alexandria, VA. The crane fell into 4 or 5 adjacent townhouses, slicing into the top floor of all of them. Miraculously, no one was home! And the crane operator just rode it down and jumped out, sufffering only a broken leg. Those cranes are scary.

There is (or was) a giant crane on 41/42 and 8th ave that always TERRIFIED me.

yes, we must stop building now! no more buildings over 4 stories anywhere! a tax on all builders and buildings! we'll make it so expensive to build in nyc that they'll never ever build another building here ever!! that'll teach them!

It is already expensive which is one reason for the atronomical rents
