I know NYC is famous for its delis. For some reason, I was just thinking about sandwiches. Anyways, perhaps in the upcoming weeks I might go to Broadway in Bryant Park, and afterwards would like to go to a deli. Does anyone recommend any delis preferably close to Times Square? And on top of that, do you have a specific sandwich you recommend? I'm looking for something cheap...I've been in the Roxy Deli and the prices weren't exactly what you'd call cheap.
The Edison makes great sandwiches. It is very cheap and near Bryant Park.
Everything is great at the Edison except the Burgers.
The best thing there is the soup. Not great for a hot day but they have the best soup in Times Square.
Personally though why eat a plain sandwich. You could go to Raku and get a spicy salmon roll instead for the cost of a boring sandwich.
Sushi sushi!

Go to KOSHER DELIGHT on 37th & Broadway. Delicious deli sandwiches at great prices. Highly recommended!

"get a spicy salmon roll instead for the cost of a boring sandwich."
...and just think of how filling that would be!
I enjoy sushi, but there's nothing "boring" about a good sandwich.
My grandparents went to the Roxy when they were here. My grandfather served in Japan, but other than that, this is the farthest he has been from Tennessee. He said, "You know, they are really proud of their food in that place." That was his way of saying it was too pricey. lol C'mon, $9 for a piece of cheesecake?

I adore a good sandwich but if I had the calorie choice sushi is always my choice and it is healthier and has less calories.
I am a bad Jew. I would pick spicy salmon over Jewish Deli every time.
I'm just wild about sushi!

The last time I was in NYC, I got a pastrami sandwich from the deli counter at the corner grocery near my hotel. It cost five bucks, and was every bit as good as the ones that cost ten bucks at the Carnegie, the Stage, Katz's, etc.

"I am a bad Jew."
Many a true word is uttered in jest.

It is called humor.
But I have never been a Deli person. I love fresh turkey but Pastrami, Corned Beef and the rest do not agree with me.
I do love the fishy things like Whitefish, Salmon Salad and Tuna.
I love fish. But Corned Beef does not excite me.

...and you've suddenly acquired it?
The Roxy, Ben Ash are over priced rip offs. I got food poisioning there in 2000 and I have never been back.

Pastrami at Katz's makes me feel like I've betrayed my arteries..
but it is tasty. The place is such a dive but a NY experience for sure.
Off the beaten track, but Corine turned me onto Barney Greengrass, and I never miss going there when I go to NYC!
Oh. That is the best place for Deli in NY.
They have the best Sturgeon. I also love the eggs, nova and onions.
As I've posted before, the burgers at the Edison are NOT horrible at all. Corine might not favor them, but there are many TERRIBLE burgers out there and Edison doesn't even rank.
And not to criticize Corine - but sincerely - the poster was genuinely asking about DELIS - not sushi. If you don't care for Delis, fine.
I still enjoy the "standard" - Carnegie Deli. People might bawk over the prices - but in actuality, the amount of SANDWICH you get is more than fair for what they charge. Go hungry!
Agree Craig. Who can eat such a huge sandwich. I always share or bring half home.
Craig,
When I eat a burger it is a treat. They are so fattening so I only eat them once a month. I would not eat a burger at the Edison as it is not in the same league as say: 21 Club or Jackson Hole. That is all I am saying.
The Edison is a frozen patty. It is not fresh like the others and I can't recommend a bad burger.
When you go to the Edison everything else is really good. The blintzes are divine and the portion huge. I can't order them because they are so delicious just like my grandma used to make.
And the lox and eggs are pretty good. Greengrass is better but also twice the price.

The nova, eggs, and onions is my new favorite!

Ahh - the Leo (lox, eggs, onions)! Y'all have inspired me for some good food.
I think I will have a that for dinner tonight with some challah toast and a big mug of coffee. Mmm-mm!

The Motzoh Ball Soup at the Edison is the best deal in midtown.

My favorite place is now closed: The Second Ave Deli. My favorite sandwiches are corned beef or tongue on rye. I really don't like pastrami. This would be served with a HUGE bowl of pickles and green tomatoes and washed down with a Dr. Brown's CelRay .
