Okay, so I bought these fresh figs and don't know what to do with them. How do you know they're ready to eat? Do you peel them? Your help is greatly appreciated!
I thought Dollypop and/or nomdeplume would be all over this thread. Hello?
I don't have a clue, but I love looking things up. From the Purdue Horticultural site:
Some people peel the skin back from the stem end to expose the flesh for eating out of-hand. The more fastidious eater holds the fruit by the stem end, cuts the fruit into quarters from the apex, spreads the sections apart and lifts the flesh from the skin with a knife blade, discarding the stem and skin... In warm, humid climates, figs are generally eaten fresh and raw without peeling, and they are often served with cream and sugar.

hi sweetie
I had a fig tree outside my bedroom in Hawaii and the mynah birds loved them and would shriek all about them in the morning.
You can eat them raw or stewed.
Smell them to see if they smell sweet and ripe.
They should maybe have a little give, but don't wait until they are squishy or they'll be overripe. And they'll smell overripe, too.
I can tell by feel or smell, but if you want to sacrifice one, just cut it in two with a knife and you'll know right away.
They are always peeled.
And I thought you were buying a fig tree just for an erotic supply of leaves.

My brother lives in California and has a fig tree. The fresh figs are incredible and nothing like the dried ones. They are fragile so eat them up quickly. Consult the Book Of Genesis of your bible for intructions on what to do with the leaves.
Figs are delicious.
And they accompany prosciutto well...
I love figs; figs do not love me.
They go very well with a Roman orgy, though.
I just eat the whole fig. I've never peeled one. The skin on the yellow/green figs is a little thicker than the dark purple figs.

Just so phanty can see his new fig leaf shorts.
(The first photo was arty, but too risque.)
I don't know diddly about figs, but I can spot a funny thread title from a mile away. I'm still laughing.

Now that you've eaten them, phanty, not wanting to spoil the experience for you, I must confess we didn't bother with the figs or the fig tree. We never netted it and just left them for the birds.
We did eat the figs a couple times, but there are so many more lucious fruits there. Hmm, figs or a Hawaiian sunrise papaya? Not a choice.
Figs also can give you the runs.

I have a great recipe for fig sorbet.
I recently made gorgonzola stuffed figs, with spanish almonds on top. Delish!

Cubans use the term "papaya" as a slang reference for the female genetalia (see by nomdeplume's illustration 4 posts back). They love to eat papaya, too, nom.
p.s. Figs are great with cheese such as a Roquefort, or Stilton, or a goat cheese as Undi recommended. Besides everbody loves Fig Newtowns (named after Newtown, MA).
