Did not see that one coming.Possibly the best season Finale I have ever seen. They will have to go some next season to top this season.
WOW
I am sitting here with my mouth open in shock. They advertised that the biggest twist is coming, and I kept thinking it had to do with Dexter's past, that Trinity was somehow involved...but OMG. To have everything come full circle like that...to the first scene of the 4th season, and to the baby...like father, like son. Just...OMG. Fairly genius.
That was shocking. And brilliant. Glad I was completely unspoiled.
...Wow, the writers have their hands full next season. Lots of Trinity loose ends to tie up (the planted evidence on the other suspect, Trinity's family knowing Dexter), and now this??
So glad in this day and age of facebook and twitter that I watched this unspoiled. I had to immediately text my friends who I knew had missed it, to stay off twitter until they watched it.
I was about to settle into disappointment with what looked like the finale, only to have it twist into one of the best season finales ever right at the last minute.
Bravo to Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow on their amazing performances.
The planted evidence is easy to explain. Trinity planted it to throw them off the scent then he left the country. Dexter has a clean slate.
What I find so refreshing about this is they do pretty much wrap everything up nicely.
Yeah, my issue was that Arthur wouldn't have known that the police had another suspect in mind, let alone have enough info to frame him -- but then I remembered the scene where he's in the police station and gets a glimpse of the Trinity evidence. Miami Metro PD needs to work on their security! But... yeah, that's that.
Bravo to you people being so composed at not spilling. The IMDB forum basically poured everything out from the finale. Lesson learned.

I didn't think it was a particularly strong season finale except for the final moments. Perhaps my standards were too high because this season has been flawless. It felt awfully predictable-save the final scenes, which left my mouth agape.

I'm mortified. I know it made sense, I know it will have people talking, but I'm still feeling sick an hour and a half later. I'm going to have trouble sleeping.
Me too, blueroses! I think I was already having a moody day, but...I'm just so sad, and can't stop thinking about it! I feel so sad for all of the characters. I was completely floored at first, then sort of came to terms, but there's this lingering, like.... sick to my stomach feeling. It's great writing, but gah.

wow just wow...still can't believe that happened...one of the best finale ever
Sweetest, i is not what Arthur actually knew, it is how the situation would be seen by by anyone following up on the case. What Arthur knew or didn't know is moot now.
I sort of figured out what was going to happen during Arthur's final scene. THey are good for giving you red herrings. They have always lulled you into a false sense of security then sucker punched you.
I don't know what was scarier: John Lithgow, or Michael C. Hall's haircut in the post-show interview.
From all the pre-finale hype I figured someone would get off'd... so I thought it would be Deborah....my son kept saying it would be Rita.... go figure...
I do love how the whole show came full circle, and how that last scene was played with Rita's cell phone call... the ringing... the baby crying... You just knew what was coming, and it was as grisly, horrifying, and shocking as you could imagine.
One thing I couldn't figure out... Dexter seemed to just pop up when Trinity had car trouble. Where did he come from? It seems like he came out of nowhere. And how did he find him? Did I miss something??

Dexter knew Arthur would have to use the Mustang as his getaway car. And didn't he find the receipt for the body shop?
Still feeling sick today. This really affected me.
I assumed that Dexter got to the mechanic shop, vandalized the car, and got in the trunk (rigged so he could get out). I'm sure Dexter got the idea to vandalize the car from the nuns in The Sound Of Music movie.

Well, I do see the resemblance between Trinity and Sister Berthe.
Blueroses, that pic is too funny.
Assuming Dexter hid in the car at the shop... How did Trinity get to Deborah's apartment and Dexter's house? By cab? I will have to watch this again to nail the logistics. I would assume that the scene showing Trinity pick up the car came after the scene where he was in Deborah's apartment...
Otherwise that would mean Dexter was in the car when he went to Dexter's house....no that can't be.
Oh well, another viewing won't kill me... It will just feel that way.
Emmys to: John Lithgow, Michael C. Hall, the Dexter series, and Jennifer Carpenter who went from worst (actor) to first.
My guess is he took the bus to all the places he went, as he's done in the past. I think he went to Dexter's right after he left his house, so he was at Dexter's house while Dexter was at his house, and then Dexter took off the oil cap and got in the trunk.
I rewatched the 11:00 viewing, and boy does that final scene with Dexter & Arthur change with what you know. You can see Arthur raise his eyebrows when Dexter says he has a family, and then how he says "it's already done."
Apparently, there's only one season left. What a ride.
I'm going to be uneasy until next October. I'm curious to see if the next season picks up immediately or if it skips a few months or years even in Dexter's life. Going to miss John Lithgow's chilling performances in the series. And poor poor Rita. I feel like I should be in all black today to mourn our loss!

It's Dexter's fault. His selfishness got in the way and he knows it. Dex had two opportunities to make sure Trinity died...at his own hands (with the buzzsaw) and at the construction site, when he was about to commit suicide. He kept Arthur around longer so he could learn from him and more innocent people were killed, hurt and traumatized in the process. Dex could have also made sure Miami Metro caught him, but he set up the bull**** Stan Beaudry decoy because he had to kill Trinity himself. I guess it can be argued that Arthur would be alive under police custody and, for his own self-preservation, Dexter needed him to be dead, but I think his actions had more to do with seeing Trinity as "his" to deal with.

This was the best hour of television all year.
I never thought this show could EVER eclipse the Keith Gordon directed Thanksgiving episode.
Well, they just did. A masterpiece.
RIP Rita.
And who thinks everything from the fade-out on Deb when the FBI takes over the case to the end of the episode is really Dexter's dream?

I didn't notice a fade-out. If only they'd pull a Bobby Ewing on us! I think it's for real, though.
The creator already said that it's NOT a dream.
It was pretty great but the ending was too disturbing for me.
It faded out right where I said. Then it faded up on the highway at night with Lithgow driving the Mustang and it breaking down.
If next season is the last season then I definitely don't think it was all a dream. Otherwise, it's possible.
