The Live Chat on showtime with John Lithgow just concluded. I feel much more at peace now with my questions. He did a good job with explanations about his character and the plotline.
I don't think it is going to be a dream a la Dallas.
Wow, I am really gonna miss this show until next season. Even though it may well have scarred me for life...
The ending reminded me of the end of season one of 24.
Like I said, it's not a dream:
Rita's gruesome bathtub death at the hands of Trinity was not, I repeat not, a dream. At least, that's not what the writers were thinking, according to executive producer Phillips.
"It's not something we're contemplating at the moment," Phillips tells me.
If you are familiar at all with the books on which the series is based you would know that dreams and reality are oftentimes one in the same in Dexter's universe. The books are called DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, after all. The show continues this dream-reality with the apparitions of Harry and the constant use of flashbacks and such. That being said, this particular episode could be part of a larger dream. I'm just hypothesizing. Remember, the writers and showrunner themselves don't even know where the series is headed, really, and they certainly are not going to be following the books at all since Rita is dead and I assume Dexter will not be training Cody in the ways of the killer as he did in the books and I'm sure Astor and Cody won't be on the show anymore. I would not put it past the writers to bring the show back to Dexter and Rita's first date or something and explore what could have been. I hope Julie Benz makes one more appearance whether in a flashback or as an apparition since she was really the heart of the show, though many fans seem to despise her character, and some closure would be nice. A shame they didn't film the murder, although that would give them reason to bring Lithgow and Benz back if only for the flashback/recreation of that scene. I definitely do not think the fade-out to the end was a dream any longer though, unless it is part of a bigger season(s)-long dream which it very well could be.
P
The Dexter series, John Lithgow and Michael C. Hall all got Golden Globe nom's, well done. I think Jennifer Carpenter was robbed, she at least deserved a nomination for this season.
After mulling things over, I wish the series ended on Sunday, becuase it just can't be topped. Would have been the best series finale ever (except MAYBE for Newhart).

Six Feet Under is probably my favorite series finale.
I have to admit that the finale salvaged the season for me. For some odd reason, I was somewhat ambivalent towards the previous episodes which led up to it. The whole Dexter-murders-a-bad guy/gal-theme was becoming a bit tired until we were able to witness the full bore of Dexter's internal & external conflicts in that finale. It certainly raises the bar for the writers/directors of next season's episodes.
There is one lingering question about the finale which I hope one of you can resolve for me. How is that Batista did not recall spotting Arthur and Dexter interacting right there in the precinct? I vividly remember the scene in which Angel watched the two from a distance as they chatted.
I've never read any of the books but sense that someone (perhaps Quinn) will suspect that Dexter played a role in Rita's untimely demise. There was some foreshadowing in a prior episode when Masuka made a not so veiled reference to Dexter's crazy ex from last season. Only so many people can disappear from Dexter's life before some crack pot detective starts trying to connect the dots. His brother Rudy, nemesis James Doekes, buddy Miguel Prado, ex-girlfriend Lila, and now his slasher-pal Arthur, are are all history.

You may be on to something. The asshole cops with violent streaks (Doakes, Quinn) ALWAYS sense something is off with Dexter. But everyone saw Dexter as a nice guy and Doakes as paranoid.

No one living--with the exception of Deb--knows that Rudy (Brian) was Dexter's brother. And Deb thinks she broke the news to Dex. Miguel never disappeared, did he? He died a hero without Dexter having to take the fall (he framed The Skinner), and La Guerta covered up the fact that he killed Ellen Wolf to spare his family and the Cuban community. And no one knew Dexter knew Arthur. Arthur's family only knew that he befriended "Kyle."

Eh, they'll find some way to explain it away. No one saw them fighting. Did Dexter tell him he was on the wrong floor? Could that be all that Batista heard? I don't remember...did Batista recall seeing Arthur in the station?

I'm anxious to see that explained away because the detectives are bound to question Arthur's family members to determine his likely whereabouts. As soon as the Kyle-Dexter connection is revealed it creates a Dexter-Arthur nexus that could put Dex in a pickle.
Next season, I see Dex on the defensive and Deb coming to his rescue, after dealing with her own doubts about him. Quinn's lookin' like a goner just like the Batista/LaGuerta nuptials. OMG, please don't let...
I wonder if Rita will appear, from time to time,in flashbacks like his father does.
It makes sense but we shall see what they come up with to top this season. Good luck.

Maybe it will be how the Arthur-Rita-Dexter connection will be made (innocent meet, Arthur holds up ID then proceeds in his cycle). It seems like Dexter was an innocent bystander.
I can't get over how GOOD this season was though...John Lithgow was such a highlight, some of the scenes with the family were extremely chilling especially.
But...for anyone who knows, does the show closely follow the books? Are they ahead of the TV show? (I.e. could I 'read' the next season :P?)
I haven't read the books but my son has. He said some things are the same, some quite different.
The Battista thing... Here is my thoughts of what might be done. Battista saw Dexter and Trinity but has no idea what transpired. From a surveillance tape it can be gleaned that Trinity snuck in, poked around (and by the way shouldn't that floor and that case room been MUCH more secure? But I digress...) and looked at Dexter's nametag. Dexter can say he had no idea who that was, the guy was asking for directions, whatever....
This gives Trinity a name from which he can track down Dexter's home and kill Rita. It gives Dexter and Trinity a public connection.
So why would Trinity do that? Well, surveillance will show him inside the case room looking around, and perhaps he was so angry he went beserk on the first cop's family he could find...something like that...
I think the encounter can be explained. My thoughts are that now that Dexter is "free" from a family, a lot more can happen with him, and that Trinity will be put behind so Dexter can move forward.
What made the season finale sad to me was that we cheer for Dexter to achieve a succeesful family life, and balance out being a serial killer by being a good dad. He came so close...
Wow. Just wow. You know.. this has been a excellent show since day one. I have no doubt it will continue to be so. Bravo. Best drama on television. ( of course except for the office romance with Batista and the boss... they could get rid of both those characters and they would not be missed).
