Disney Barely Represents Pocahontas

Anyone else upset that just because she's not an airheaded, ballgown wearing princess with a tiara that she is barely represented in the DISNEY PRINCESS line while she is a PRINCESS???? And Meeko is so cute, but I've never seen him at the parks! And why is Mulan a princess yet she is not an actual PRINCESS??????

I agree. She's sadly underrepresented at the parks, too. There should be a Pocahontas ride - maybe a canoe flume thing like Splash Mountain.

I actually designed I ride like that in my mind and it would be where the Hunchback show used to be in Frontierland at Disneyland. It's on the border of Fantasyland, which is fitting.

Did Pocahontas really learn English immediately by listening with her heart at her dead grandmother's command or was that something they added for the movie?

Actually, Pocahontas was not an actual princess. The line of power among her tribe was matrilineal, not patrilineal. So she would only have inherited the status of her mother, which was probably low. Her mother was probably just one of many women the chief had children by. He would then send mother and child back to their former life and low status. So she had neither the title or implied status of a princess.

It was only the europeans of the time who referred to her as princess because they were using their own frame of reference.

Not that this means she should have a lesser status than the other Disney gals. But her story has already been twisted enough over time.

blueroses is exactly right. At the Princess Fantasy Faire (where I used to work, and probably will work again after the New Year), parents would actually get pissed off when Pocahontas or Mulan was in the Royal Walk (meet-and-greet/picture area). Nobody cares about them, for whatever reason. (I adore Mulan, personally, but that's just me.) Also, I have been told many times by the real Disney fanatics who work there that neither Mulan nor Pocahontas is an actual Princess. The others all are, either by birth or marriage. :-P

I loved wearing my Pocahontas costume and twirling about outside, while talking to the trees and listening to the voices of the mountains (in Florida).

Totally a legit Princess costume.

tazber: Incorrect. Princess Jasmine is not white, and she is most definitely a Disney Princess. (She is the Sultan's daughter, after all.) :-P She is heavily represented in the merchandise, and is extremely popular with the public - WAY more popular than either Snow White or Aurora, actually.

I definitely used to use this old tan fabric which I would fringe and fashion into a fabulous Pocahontas costume...(my parents were thrilled when I decided to put it on at Thanksgiving)

I think Disney would prefer to forget that "Pocahontas" happened--it was one of the dimmest and dullest of all their cartoon features, without even camp appeal.

erika, Jasmine is barely represented on most of the new "Disney Princess" merchandise. The talking cash register, talking nursery, talking vanity, talking kitchen, and talking throne (god, I wish I were kidding) are exclusively Cinderella, Belle and Aurora.

Orangeskittles: Well, that sounds like they're concentrating on "Classic" Disney Princesses for that particular line of products, if Belle's not on there. Because she is - BY FAR - the most popular of all the Princesses. You should hear the little kids scream when she comes down the stairs in our little show...it's like freakin' Beatlemania! But Aurora, Cindy, and Snow are the originals, so they get a lot of "reverence" (wish I was kidding, but I'm not), for that.

And poor Ariel isn't represented in our show because she has a tail. It's discrimination, I tell ya!!

She's part of the 'Fairy' line, like the fairies in Sleeping Beauty.

Remember that craptastic "Light Magic" parade that replaced the Electrical Parade.

They TRIED to do a whole 'fairy' thing with that, and it just bombed.

They needs to put out a "Disney Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" line, featuring Esmeralda, Megara and Jasmine.

Ariel, Mulan and Pocahontas can be in the "Half Breed" collection.

i noticed Disney barely represents Maid Marian as well. they are prejudiced against her because of her fox-like skin!
