Disney MGM Studios Animation has not been the same since they closed that department...

I'm so excited. Actually the other day I was watching the Little Mermaid and I was wondering why doesn't Disney makes these incredible animated films anymore? I remember hearing about the Alan Menken Home on the Range flop and thinking "Oh no I bet that's the last of the animated movie musicals" but I guess I'm wrong. I'm so excited for Enchanted and I heard that there is anoth new film due out in 2008 or 2009 with Kristen Chenoweth called Repunzel Unwravled.

Yes! Thank God! I, also, wondered why they didnt' make any more drawn animation films anymore. Those were classic!

Some day they will realize that it's not the medium, it's the quality of the story they are telling. It's not enough to show us really big special effects. Toy Story and Shrek and Finding Nemo are also *gasp* good movies! Why is Lilo and Stitch so popular? It's a *gasp* good movie! So many missteps. Disney, in so little time thou hast destroyed a 70 year tradition.

I liked the Disney CG animated movies, but I really did miss all those good traditionally animated movies such as Little Mermaid, Lion King, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Mulan, Bambi, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast...shall I go on?

That makes me so happy.

As I have said before,I was supposed to go into animation as a career, but then the industry went under when Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Brother and Fox all closed their Traditional Animation Feature Film departments. This gives me hope. There are SOOO many great animators out there that they can get. Old Disneyers as well as amazing Dreamworks, FOX and WB people (Rodolphe Guenoden, James Baxter, David Brewster and, of course, Glen Keane are my gods of animation).

And I have to add a thanks to RoninJoey for arguing what i have for 10 years now, since I first became involved in animation. The reason that computer animated films overtook traditional films at the box office after Toy Story came out was because the writing was simply that much better. It had very little to do with the medium, because after a while it lost the appeal of its newness, and became about the writing. Brad Bird who directed The Incredibles, also directed an amazing traditional film called The Iron Giant. He managed to make wonderful films in both mediums. Again people (although I am mostly preaching to the converted): Its the message, not the medium.

I would love for them to bring this back. When I went to Florida and took the animation studios tour it was heartbreaking to hear how they closed everything down. Absolutely heartbreaking...

Yes, they abandoned all that once made them great. Such a shame. What was the last good Disney movie? Pocahontas?

pocahontas was definately not good. but I loved Hunchback and consider that one the best last Disney animated film.

re: Disney Might Revive Hand-Drawn Division!

The last time I was at Disneyworld, MGM Studios was new and I watched the animators creating Mulan. It was a sad day when they announced it was closing. But that is the path of progress. Hand-drawn animation is phasing out much in the same way of B&W photography in live action films. I hope Disney brings it back, but it may become simply a method to invoke a sense of nostalgia. It's a shame because Fantasia 2000 was a masterpiece, but after The Emperor's New Groove, it all started going downhill. Not because of the animation style, but just poor writing and direction. The ideas were great, but the execution was poor.

Akiva, funny world. I was going to go to school for traditional animation also, but I decided against it when I saw how the industry was sliding downhill.

I mean, also, I'm merely a mediocre artist, but that didn't deter me at the time :P

It's still a little secret dream of mine to work in animation someday, not as an artist but something. I also want to write an RPG :P I have a lot of secret little dreams.

Yeah, and look at those mediocre computer animated movies like Robots. Nobody cares about them. Why? Because they're bad movies. Finding Nemo wasn't about the impressively animated ocean, it was about the heartbreakingly good story and characters. Oh, and Ellen.

If it takes Disney three years to put out an animated movie and it's a good movie, it's a wait I'm willing to have. I hope they keep them as musicals too. I think they need to get another person with vision there and fire all the robots.

In the meantime, Mr. Miyazaki still seems to be cranking out great movies, even though he keeps saying he'll retire!

re: Disney Might Revive Hand-Drawn Division!

RoninJoey,

There are lots of great jobs in the industry that don't require amazing drawing ability. I personally feel that if I were to ever reenter the Animation industry, my drawing and animation skills would no longer be up to par (Oddly I think I peaked when I was 17...mind you I had been working for quite a few years at that point) to be an animator and i think I would opt to be a story artist instead. I love figuring out interesting shots to tell the story best.

And I have to agree that I think it is best that Disney slows down production and takes more time to focus each film instead of cranking them out, just for the sake of numbers.
