SNAFU, from the Centers for Disease Control:

"Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smoking causes an estimated 438,000 deaths, or about 1 of every 5 deaths, each year. This estimate includes approximately 38,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure."

and

"More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined."

Smoking does kill more people in a year, than alcohol-related deaths. However, alcohol is responsible for double the years of life lost (the amount of years someone would have lived), compared to smoking, because so many alcohol-related deaths happen to younger people. Far greater than those lost to smoking.

This is bull****. Are they going to start censoring cigarettes in the TV versions of films now? How are mobsters going to look menacing now?

Disney can do whatever they want. They are the ones putting up the money to make the movies. As long as they don't start fiddling with older movies, I'm fine with this.

I mean, part of the reason why so many people smoke is because of how cool the mass media made it look before the country decided it was anti-smoking. It just sounds like Disney doesn't want to be the ones who gave kids the idea to smoke.

It sucks that we live in such a whitewash world but hey, cigarettes are not something I would personally miss from the world. As cool as they are.

Who smokes in the movies anymore anyway!? Captain Jack Sparrow maybe?

Could you imagine if they went back and removed cigarettes from old movies...I just watched Now, Voyager the other day, and the Cigarette plays an important role in the film. Without it, it would lose it's effect.

And even though Disney removes it, it still exhists, Kids see it in other forms, at school, at home. If you ban it, it will create more. Look at prohibition. But whatever, Disney has been going down hill each year.

We don't know yet if Disney's removal of smoking in movies will create more smokers. Frankly, I find many other images and messages that are prevalent in Disney's tv shows to be just as frightening as smoking- messages that I really don't want the younger generation emulating. But whatever. Let them try it, see what happens. It can't hurt.

And the day that they go back and edit older films will be a frightening day, indeed. I'm not sure how they would legally swing that, but let me tell you - if the introduction to Romeo in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 version was edited so that Leo wasn't smoking, I would slap a bitch.
