re: Mission Space Ride Kills Second Victim

I went on Mission Space.

Alien Encounter was the one bad-for-kids thing in Magic Kingdom. I loved it. My dad and I used to stand outside and watch as parents disregarded the multiple warnings for no little children, and then laugh as the kids were sobbing and had to be run out of the ride. They will be horrified for life because of their idiot parents.

Gettinhep, I agree, I adored Horizons! I'm pretty sure it was my favorite "ride" in EPCOT during my first Disney trip(only time I ever went on it).

I really don't get it though, it seems like half the people get sick and half the people love it and don't feel dizzy. What's the difference? I mean this happens with all rides obviously, some get sick, some don't, but I've just never seen such a completely wide divide in terms of fine vs. sick as this one.

oooooh, I miss Horizons.

As to why Mission Space bothers some people at not others, phyiscally, it has to do with the fact that it can affect a lot of different things in your body. For example, I'm prone to balance problems, so it would make me very dizzy. It just depends on the person's condition. It's not really just like a roller coaster that makes some people motion sick like a car or a plane might -- this puts you in a fairly unnatural state.

My cousin was forced to go on it by her parents when she was young, she still brings it up now. I'm pretty sure she's been scarred for life.

Yeah... when I was seven we accidentally went on Alien; Encounter, we thought the line led to another ride. But once we got in there, it scared the SH*T out of me. I was fighting to get out of the harness, and was crying. By the time I got out of it, I was pretty damn thrilled, and was terrified. I couldn't stop shaking until we went on It's a Small World another five times...

It's now been replaced by Stitch's Great Escape.

I went on Alien Encounter when I was about 8, and it wasn't that terrifying. Granted, my eyes were closed during most of the ride.

I used to love Horizons. So sad that it's gone..

"I still prefer Universal to Disney, I just like their rides better."

Really? Although I love universal too, I think Disney's rides are better themed and they always seem to have the newest technology. Although I think Universal has more THRILL rides.

Okay, which one is Alien Encounter?? This isn't the one where you get to steer your car, shoot the aliens and tally up your points, right? Because if so, how was it terrifying?? Nauseating maybe (from the spinning), but scary???

Yes, really. Disney is fantastic, but Universal has my favorite ride (Men in Black shooting thing, if that's a ride) and my favorite playground/park (Jurassic Park in Adventure Islands).

Oh, whoops, I'm thinking the Men In Black shooting thing from Universal, not Alien Encounter.

I haven't been to Islands of Adventure yet, but the rides there looked incredibly fun!

I have the urge to start a Disney Theme Park thread on the best rides and attractions at each one.

Islands of Adventure is great! There was ride I wasn't fond of, Dudley Doo Right's Ripsaw Falls, but that's because I dislike numerous drops in water (just one big one or two is okay). They have some fantastic roller coasters.

Actually from what I read, the investigation revealed that Mission Space wasn't really what caused the first death. Apparently the heart defect that child suffered from could have caused his death at anytime.
There's not enough information yet about this case. But I suspect it will be a similar circumstance.

This is the latest information I found:

"[Update: (4/14) A medical examiner has issued a preliminary report stating that Hiltrud Bluemel, 49, died of a stroke linked to long-standing high blood pressure. The report did not mention a connection between the ride and her death.]"

Yeah that's what I heard too, he had unknown previous conditions.
