This was perhaps the craziest of classes that I took in middle school and high school. They taught us about drugs, alchohol.......... SEX! It seemed so awkward back in the sixties and seventies. In middle school they would separate the boys from the girls so we could see that ever popular film IT IS WONDERFUL TO BE A GIRL. It was about the menstrual cycle and at the age of 12 I thought it was a big secret. I often wondered what film the boys were watching. Probably some film about the joys of masculinity called HOW TO LEAVE THE SEAT UP . In high school the Health classes were co-ed and I had the sexiest male teacher around. He was a Phy Ed teacher with bulging biceps. All the things they taught us about drugs, alcohol, sex, etc......did they think we really didn't know about it?
OMG. Mr(s) Grodner.
Turn on the light, sprite and make it brite.
I take highschool health next year..what is this sex you speak of? Updated On: 1/30/06 at 06:11 PM
we had this old 80 year old guy who wore short shorts teaching health class who would start each class by putting a foot up on a desk and saying "hello class!"
he was a horrible teacher, told us the biggest consequence of drinking was getting caught by your parents, and blushed when he said the word "penis"
i learned nothing and passed with flying colors.
I procrastinated and "didn't have room" for Health til I was a senior. They left the sex stuff for the last 2 weeks of school and the seniors got out 2 weeks before everyone else. I guess you could say I'm not educated about sex, then. :)
I do remember the one day he threw in some random condom conversation - but he stuck a big ole safety pin through it so when it came around the room nobody would steal it!

I only had to take 7th grade health. I remember hearing stories of the notorious bulimia video and I remember asking my teacher that day to please excuse me from watching it and he wrote me a pass and I had to sit in an empty classroom with a health book. But at least I was free from watching people throw up, I was horrified about throw up. Now I don't think I care as much
edit; now I remember we had mandatory 9th grade health too. Watching the baby born!
I was taught by a nun. A bitchy nun, to be exact. They separated the boys and girls, but that was expected from a Catholic school. I was really immature (still am), so I just remember laughing with my friends over any word in relation to sex or body parts. Honestly, I really miss health class. It's so funny, and a fantastic way to get out of learning actual academics.
I remember having a few weeks of health lessons in 6th grade and then a full semester of health class in 10th grade (the only semester I didn't have to take gym). My 10th grade health teacher was a bit of a moron - he kind of skipped over a lot of the sex ed stuff he was supposed to teach and tried to relate everything back to stress and the need for self-actualization. We watched a lot of really cheesy videos, too.
Yes. I actually had a half decent health teacher that wasn't a freak. I still can't get over how another health teacher decided to basically skip over sex ed and focus on depression, EDs, confidence, and lifestyle choices, and basically took the time to bash certain people and flex his bicepts. (Then again he gave people extra credit for going to an AA meeting...)

Marlene, that's who my brother had for health! LMAO at the bicep-flexing comment.
(For those of you going "WTF?," Marlene goes to the same high school that I attended.)
We watched Oprah in health over the summer, it was fun.

Oh- jeez.
Anyone remember how to put a condom on using a banana or cucumber?
We also had to watch a show with a baby being born. However, it wasn't a show I had expected...it was like a cartoon!
We took a 'field trip' into the boys/girls bathroom to see and understand the difference. Someone asked for that field trip so maybe you can try it too.
We had to bring in provocative looking pictures and describe why it is bad to advertise that way and if it provokes sex. Also, we had discussions on whether to give condoms out in schools.
Our classes were really small- so I there were 8 people in my class. My teacher's father even came in one day to give a talk because he was a gynocologist.
*Sigh* The joys of high school.
Back in 5th grade we had a whole health class too but the girls and guys were seperated. But at recess, sometimes there would be some 'dirty talk.' If you were caught talking to the opposite sex about it, you didn't get recess the next day. Did the teachers honestly think that there wouldn't be any other time to talk to your friends about it?

I also remember having to study the environment in health class. For some reason, studying about sex and drugs seemed so much more interesting.
In an ideal world, school boards would create a whole mandatory course on issues of health, sexuality and adolescence, not just stuff it all into one compulsory week per term.

I remember watching the AIDS nick news special. Linda Ellerbee I remember dealt with really good issues to discuss and was very good, but I also remember her showing how to put a condom on by demonstrating on her fingers.
My 7th grade teacher showed us frightening videos and talked a lot about mental disturbances and alcohol,
9th grade health teacher just talked about drugs allllll the time.

My last health class of the year is tomorrow!! Yay! We started learning about drugs and that they can look like candy in 1st grade and continues on forever. They really get into more about 4th grade and the rest of the stuff is middle school. Last week I got to watch the Miracle of Life. Fun, fun. And no we don't get seperated either. The best part was the teacher is pregnant and so we got descriptions of what it felt liek for a baby to kick. LOL. I'm so happy to go back to gym though!!

Your avatar is incredible. I can't stop staring
In my health class we watched all these lame videos about how these teens would drink and drive. then they sent the kids to a police station and the cops are like there was a drunk driving crash that happend last night, then they listed off the names of the kids, like they were the ones who were killed. They were pretty lame. I also had health right after lunch so if anything was graphic it made me sick.
deng, i hated health class. i had this old grandma lady for a teacher and she would make us watch videos of animals doing it. *shudder* wanted to vommit every morning she made us watch that. then the following year our school decided to make health NOT mandatory anymore for graduation. grrr...wasted a semester

Yenta, I believe your sexy gym teacher with bulging bi-ceps was arrested a few weeks ago for soliciting an undercover police officer on Bald Hill.
Was his first name Leroy?
Let's just say I was not one to stay awake in health class. In fact, as soon as my teacher would dim the lights to watch a movie, I was out! Well, until one day when he decided to come up behind me and pour a good amount of water on the back of my neck as I slept with my head down. Boy, that woke me up fast!
I have ahead of me nine weeks of high school health.
We'll see how it goes.

Wait a minuite! I think Yenta's Health teacher was named Joe. He wasn't arrested, but he did have bulging bi-ceps.

Thsose are the kind of videos we watched in driver's Ed! Oh- Lord! Anyone remember driver's ed?? Those videos were beyond morbid. Every single week we watched them! And then I had nightmares for a week and then would have to go back and watch more! *shudders at the thought!*
In our health class, the girls learned about their periods.
In the boys class, they played dodgeball.
No kidding.
