For me, it's extremely difficult for me to do. Singing in that way makes me really uncomfortable because it's so big. I feel really weird when I sing that way.
What do you guys think?

I'm the exact opposite- it's not difficult for me to sing in a "big, musical theatre" voice at all. If anything, it's difficult for me to tone down.

What about the Tom Waits style of singing:

Define "musical theater style". If you're studying more contemporary technique, you may want to look into classical musical theatre trainging. That type gives you the best diversity and really trains your skills well.
Good solid classical musical theatre technique is brilliant and won't give you the gift of nodes. Once you have the technique down, you can advance into different styles while still singing safely.

What is "classical musical theater"?
Not nasally, no riffing. Straight up correct singing technique. It's a disappearing art. haha

What do you think of Tom Waits' style of singing?
it hurts my vocal chords listening to it.
lets just call is "classical singing" and not "classical musical theatre" singing. Train from an Opera singer, and you should be golden (as long as the Opera singer is Legit and knows what the hell he/she is talking about). Correct vocal technique is coming back to Broadway, so look out!
"Correct vocal technique is coming back to Broadway, so look out!"
I'm glad someone else thinks so too!!!
And its really true, a background in classical music is the most valuable thing you can have. Look at Audra Macdonald, Cheno, Kelli O'Hara

But, in a way, wouldn't Tom Waits be an amazing singer because he still has a voice?
....Quoi? No. I wouldn't say so, at least.

Well, if it's what I think it is, then I LOVE it!
I wouldn't admire somebody just because they have supposedly "healthy" voices despite the way they sing. Which is why I don't like those screamo rock groups either.
I think I got nodes just by watching that video.

I can't sing pop if I tried. I've always been a musical theatre singer, and it's so difficult to switch to a pop, folk, or rock song now because of the huge difference between the two.

I try to sing in different genres. As many as I can.

I am being trained classically, but it's really easy for me to switch into other styles.

I hope a more classical approach is coming back. I don't like male singers who have a tenor timbre sing a song that was meant for a baritone. Same as female. Singing styles have always changed on broadway. Even though Disney has positive influence on the musical, one of the negatives is this little girl voice that is being imitated and used for role. You can tell what people are not using their real voice.
Cruel - Classical training will actually give you GREAT versatility and allow you to sing different genres.
I'm classically trained and, because of it, I can sing many different styles of music without hurting myself. The classical technique, I believe, is the core of all healthy and beautiful voices.
True dat.

Yeah, classical training is a good, solid foundation for any type of singing. I realize I'm just reiterating what flicker just said, sort of, but I wanted to reemphasize because I really believe it's important and should be taken into consideration.
