Do you use amazon?

With all the petty antics with Hachette, the working conditions for employees, and now the bullying of UK publishers too - it's slowly dawned on me that amazon are pure evil. I feel bad for giving them so much custom.

Do you have any qualms about ordering from them? Is there any alternative?

Jeff Bezos always seemed like such a nice guy on Charlie Rose.

No where else to get cd's. I have a kindle so I am kind of joined @ the hip with them.

I have greater reservations about those retailers whose products are shoddy, whose customer service people are rude or untrained, and who fail to deliver my purchases intact or on time. Bezos is a cut-throat a**hole but he knows one thing that a lot of other businesses need to remember: it is all about customer convenience and satisfaction. His price cutting will eventually have to go away if he wants to show a profit but at the moment I will keep hitting that 1-Click button.

I think it's a slippery slope leading to a drain the country is going to circle around. I've used them a couple times and never for books. I guess I am just clever enough to know where I can buy cds.

The more Bezos makes it impossible for us to spend money in our own local economies, the more we seal our fate.

I buy a majority of my blu rays from amazon because where the hell else can I get them nowadays?

It's pure evil but it's no more evil than Apple or Microsoft, which use near-slave labor to build our electronics, or Google or Facebook, which are more efficient at depriving us of privacy than any government will ever be.

After they have destroyed all vestiges of competition, they will own us.

The funny thing is that America's experiment with free market capitalism has been nourishing a growing Goliath: China. Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Wal-mart, et al. are basically contributing to the (already imminent) domination of China's economy over the U.S.

China's GDP is projected to overtake the U.S. by the end of this year. China will own us all in 20... scratch that, 10-15 years.

We stopped when Amazon UK stopped the free super saver shipping to European countries beyond the UK. That made things so much more affordable and it was easy to get DVDS in English. We did our baby registry there and had wish lists that made gift giving simple for my family in the US. Itt was just the easiest, most affordable way to get many items. It was SO much cheaper than Swedish retail. Then, out of the blue, all the valued Amazon UK customers got an email saying the program had ended the day before. Now the baby wipes that we ordered which were £10 per case cost £8 each to ship.

It's evil, but it was almost a necessary evil when living on a single income. Now, a least, our money goes to companies that I know treat their employees well.

I don't order from Amazon if I have other alternatives, and I most always have. One advantage to ordering from Barnes & Noble (remember when they were the bad guys?) is that many items arrive the same day in NYC.

I'll admit that I do. But, I do agree with PalJoey that they aren't the only company that does it, sadly.

Interestingly, this reminds me of answers people gave me once in the comments of a poll about using the self checkouts at stores. Some people were screaming and yelling about how those are evil because the stores don't have to hire more people for those jobs. I brought up Amazon putting stores out of business and what they thought. Go figure they said that was okay because Amazon creates jobs, even if they aren't good or everywhere. I brought it up because it was one of those gift card earning sites where everyone loves the $5 Amazon cards.
