"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Come next year, doctors may start to see a problem they've yet to experience -- a pen shortage.

New guidelines released on Thursday by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) prohibit drug makers from giving out pens, as well as other "non-educational" items such as mugs, to healthcare providers and their staffs.

As part of its revised marketing code, the pharmaceutical trade organization determined that such items, which are typically adorned with a company or product logo, may foster misperceptions that these interactions with healthcare professionals "are not based on informing them about medical and scientific issues.""

It's about time they stopped this. I've always worried about doctors figuring out which meds they can give before figuring out the illness. And yes, I also read "penis".

Some day, we will be able to tell our grandchildren "When I was your age, they gave out free pens at doctor's offices!"

So I'm not the only one with a dirty mind on here. Why does that not surprise me...

damn so that means my mom wont be bringing home nexium mugs and neocate pens anymore?
one time a drug rep gave her a model car for my brother.
we also get notebooks, post-its, stuffed bears with advertisements on their tshirts, palm tree shaped crazy straws (for the tropical flavor neocate), highlighters, binders... one year i didn't even have to go school supply shopping. i just went to my mom's office and got what i needed re: Drug companies to stop giving away free pens!

Well, I was a pharmaceutical rep for 11 years. Giving away pens is a small aspect of the whole business. I can't tell you how many greedy docs and office staff there were. So many offices wouldn't even let you in unless you brought lunch for the entire office- and then the doctor wouldn't even show up. So many of the samples went to office staff and their families. Meanwhile, I would sit out in the lobby and hear people talk about how they couldn't afford their drugs. I'm glad I'm out of the industry since it evolved so much over the years. (it wasn't like that when I first started) There are too many reps out there. I remember a doctor who hardly gave any access. One of my co-workers said that if I brought him Panera bagels every week- then I would get access! (so basically, if the doctors were pricks- they got more attention) I could go one but the bottom line is- the industry has pimped itself out!

oh, and i also have a fleece blanket from remicade on my bed. how could i forget about my remicade blanket!

i guess drug reps bring better stuff to children's hospitals than just pens?

There is NOTHING at the doc's office without a drug name on it.

I asked the nurse if she had trouble getting this paper to stay down on the exam table.
