Well, for me the post above your is Wilmingtom, but since he didn't mention Oreos, I'm thinking you're responding to someone I'm using the "ignore" feature for.
Feel free to clue me in. Or not, as you wish.

Reg, in an earlier post someone said:
"In a related story, OREO COOKIES have been banned at Columbia University for being Racist."
And posted a picture of someone in an Oreo costume.
I've done a google search for "Columbia Oreo Banned " and have come up empty. The person who posted it did not give a link to the story so that it could be verified or to give context.

I'll probably regret wading into this, but
The Associated Press noted that skin tone is a big deal in Thai advertising, with one whitening cream selling the idea “that white-skinned people have better job prospects than those with dark skin” and a toothpaste brand assuring consumers that its darker product “is black, but it’s good”.

Skin tone is a big deal in a number of societies, including our own. But I still don't think the ad carries the same signifiers for a Thai audience as it would a US one.
JAG, thanks. Yeah, I couldn't find anything either.

I don't think it's about forcing American notions of what is and isn't racist on them, anymore than I think that just because Thailand doesn't have the experience of American white on black racism that as a whole an entire country can be ignorant of the racial implications of something that brings to mind the tradition of blackface. But I also don't understand the thinking that the way to advertise a "charcoal" donut is to paint a person's skin black.
Here's the toothpaste commercial

Apparently "Black Man" is a brand in Thailand.

Apparently. That to me seems different from the doughnut ad. Maybe it's not.
Roxy, is that true?

God gosh. It was a joke. Didnt the picture of the Oreo Man make that clear?
Though with Columbias history of lefty radicals. Booing soldiers and welcoming terrorists like the weather underground, Qaddafi and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad I guess its understandable.
