The question of who counts as a full-time worker is coming under fire from Dunkin' Brands, which wants the government to narrow its definition under Obamacare. That's because it wants to avoid paying health insurance for Dunkin' Donuts employees who work as little as 30 hours a week.

Of course they are. It's the same reason WalMart keeps it's employees "part time" by scheduling them for 29 1/2 hours. Employers will do ANYTHING to keep from paying out money for any reason. They don't want minimum wage to go up, they don't want to be forced to offer health insurance (or even sick days) they don't want to pay time-and-a half for holidays- They want to charge as much as they can and pay as little as possible.

True. My Sister-in-Law sent me this stupid email this morning listing all the reasons Walmart is a successful company...biggest seller of groceries now...stores expanding every day...why can't our government take a lesson from them?

I told her to stop by a Walmart sometime and ask any of the employees there just how much all those successes are affecting them. They'd probably tell her that they were working harder for the same crappy pay with no raises and crappy, if any benefits, while the owners were buying extra yachts, not creating jobs and fighting minimum wage increases.

Let's get our government to act like that so we can all become like Walmart employees. I have no idea why people are such idiots rooting for the big guy against their own interests.

I considered working for WalMart- I had a career in retail and an acquaintance enjoyed working there. When he told me about having his HR person work with all new hires to get them signed up for any available government benefits (food stamps, medic-aide, housing assistance) because their "full-time" employees made about $215 a week I decided to pass on that interview.

Walmart also puts other businesses under. At least that's what I witnessed in my area. Before Walmart came along, we had 2 stores that were similar to it and they seemed to do just fine. Walmart came and they made everything seem so appealing and cheaper that the other two stores finally went under and closed.

And they offer helpful seminars so their employees can apply for food stamps, which they probably by fine steak and cigarettes with as they chat on their bedazzled iPhone6s in line at the Whole Foods.

You know what? Food stamps aren't actually stamps. I found that really disappointing.

Yes Plum. They looked a bit like Traveler's Checks (remember those?). Now they are debit cards.

I always imagined they would be like the S&H Green Stamps where you collected them and pasted them in books. When you have enough, you could fight over trading them in for a rowboat or a sewing machine.

Who pays for the fancy cars and fur coats they drive up to the stores in? Right Abby?

Why do employers have to offer health insurance? Why don't people buy and pay for their own health insurance, or at least have that option? Health insurance started out as a benefit that businesses used to lure the best employees to their jobs. Then, somehow, everyone started to expect health benefits with every job and then the government started mandating it. How does this happen? Where does the federal government get the power to tell businesses how they MUST (by law) compensate their employees? If everyone was out there buying their own health insurance (and thus looking for the best deal ) wouldn't that drive the costs down?
I honestly do not understand this.

Where does "government" get the right to tell me I can't slap idiots who say stupid things? Like really hard slaps. Jaw-breaking (but not life-threatening) slaps.

I still don't see where the government gets off telling people they can't own slaves. There was no such thing as minimum wage, much less health insurance, in the ante-bellum South, and look at all the work they got done.

The Emancipation Proclamation--that's where this country went wrong.

Exactly Reg! Can you imagine the BOOM we could have- the problems we could solve- if we just made all illegals slaves? They want to be here, we need cheap labor- VOILA! The USA would be a paradise again.

I used to work at a pre school in not the nicest of areas (Jamaica, Queens, in case anyone knows what that's like and was curious.) And, there are two bodegas in walking distance from the school. Both accepted food stamps/EBT.) And, there were signs in both of them saying that you can't use EBT/food stamps on cigarettes or booze. By the way, EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer or that debit card you get from the government that has strict do's and don'ts.
