Dystopian Future Movies#1

Posted: 4/18/07 at 10:18am

Hey,

Question for all you film buffs out there. My friend and i were just talking and we want to have a Dystopian Future Movie night since we both like movies like Blade Runner, Fifth Element, Minority Report, Clockwork Orange, Dark City, etc. Any good suggestions?

You named all my favorites (Blade Runner being at the very top of the list), but what about The Matrix? Or, - and now we're getting into the "classics" - Soylent Green. The original Planet of the Apes could count, too. And the film version (not the TV series) of Logan's Run.

God, there's a million. The grandaddy being METROPOLIS.

Well, yes, but silent movies are a tough sell. re: Dystopian Future Movies

Speaking of dystopian future movies, has anyone seen Children of Men? I never got around to it...wondering if I should Netflix it?

Borstal Boy: Yup there are a million. Which are your faves though.

I'm thinking or renting City of Lost Children, since Amelie is one of my faves and its the same director.

Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!!!!

Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you. Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

For a comic take on the issue, check out IDIOTOCRACY. Then check out the bizarre, still-not-totally-revealed story as to why Mike Judge's follow-up to OFFICE SPACE was completely buried by its distributor.

Jaily: Way to ruin the movie if he hadn't seen it yet! re: Dystopian Future Movies

Erika,

Children of Men is how we got on the subject and discovered we both had a passion for these movies. I didn't seen it yet, but she loved it.

If you're thinking City Of Lost Children, then you should go with Delicattessen. Same director, post-appocalyptic setting, brilliant film.

Link: Good to know. re: Dystopian Future Movies I will definitely check it out.

I saw City of Lost Children in the theatres way back when, and I liked it, but I don't count it in the same category.

I love City of Lost Children and Delicatessin! Children of Men was stunning. Logan's Run is one of my all-time favorites. I must have watched it at least 25 times. I was a fan of the short-lived TV series as well.

Also check out the very surreal Songs From the Second Floor. It's like viewing live-action poetry.

I was a fan of the TV series, too (I was a wee tyke, but I loved me some sci-fi), but I just adore the film, mainly because of lovely Michael York. re: Dystopian Future Movies

To complete Charleton Heston's sci-fi trilogy I must add The Omega Man. Super Dystopian!

If the silent film version of "Metropolis" isn't an easy sell, I highly recommend the recent anime version by Osama Tezuka. I thought it was a beautiful movie and every bit as moving as the original.

The Matrix is also at the very top of my list, as well as the film version of 1984.

The television miniseries of The Martian Chronicles is available on DVD. The special effects are quite hokey, but it's an engrossing story, nonetheless.
