Posted: 3/31/08 at 6:43pmI'm suprised no one has mentioned "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeny Todd. It may be a little over done, but if you can do it well its wonderful. And a great dramatic piece. Got me into thespian festival showcase last summer. Also look at pretty much any of Lizzie's songs from 110 in the Shade, and "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime. Oh, and "Bill" from Showboat.

Meadowlark, Daddy's Son (especially) and Bill are SO overdone, seriously. Green Finch also, there are plenty of other equally as good sop songs to resort to. Like 110 in the shade.

The most heartbreaking soprano song I know is "What's the Use of Wondrin'?" from Carousel. It's absolutely devastating, and gorgeous too.
there's a lot of really great heavy soprano material.
"Old Maid" from 110 in the Shade also comes to mind. The person who recommended Faure also knows what they're talkin' about.
I believe "Migratory V" was mentioned earlier. "The Beauty Is" from The Light in the Piazza is great, too.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 5:34pmOkay so the competition was yesterday. I ended up singing Somewhere That's Green from Little Shop of Horrors. Totally not a legit serious soprano song, but I never really get to sing anything in that style and I wanted to show my interpretation of the character. I ended up getting 2nd place! The guy I lost to sang Johanna from Sweeney Todd. Green Finch and Linnet Bird was my other option, but I assumed ST would be heavily overdone this year with the movie and I was right because the winner and another girl from a different school in my town sang from that show.
