I love them both big time.
Do you have a preference?

No contest. Ella! Ella! Ella!
Ella most of the time. But only because she competes with Billie and Dinah for play time.
But only Peggy's got the only rendition of "Fever" which cannot be equaled...
Miss Peggy Lee...When I was a baby my Mother played alot of Peggy around the house....So when I hear Peggy on the radio, I think of my childhood and my Mommie Dearest.......Oh Miss Peggy was sooooo COOL!!!!Love her!!!!I have like four of her CD's
Ella...but as Ella herself used to say in interviews when they asked her which other female singers she liked, "Oh, don't make me choose! I love ALL my ladies!"

Ella may have been a purer vocalist, but MISS Peggy Lee knew how to live her life through song - she took risks and made choices that few were willing to in her day - and Fever is still just about the sexiest recording ever made

Ella for sure. I even named my friend's cat after her.
Ella and Etta James are the BEST ever......PERIOD!!!
"Fever til ya sizzle...(tststst) What a lovely way to burn." So sultry, I love it.
Ella!
Gotta love her songbook series, especially the Cole Porter one.

Ella's pretty much the Queen of vocal interpretation - but Peggy knew what was involved with the underside of reality - and it showed in her song stylings. I listen to Ella when I want a perfect atmosphere - I listen to Peggy when I want to . . . well, when I want to . . . well, you know
...fever all through the night
Miss Peggy Lee
i was just reminded of it but I do also love me some Etta James and Billie Holiday.
before two this year I would have said Ella, hands down - but now I've been exposed to a bunch of Peggy's earlier recordings and though I always liked her - now I love her voice. I think the two of them are pretty much on par with each other, so I don't think I'd want to have to choose between them.
Peggy did take more chances, as the always astute DGrant observed. But Ella wins my vote more because of her American Songbook series.
Ella's American Songbook is such a classic that it redefines the word "classic"!
any favourites withing the songbook series? The Gershwin songbook is my absolute favourite.
God I love Ella!
I love Peggy too!
Did Ella compose?

Ella didn't compose, as far as I know. Peggy did, as I'm sure you're aware.
One of my favorites is Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered by Ella. It was the first time I realized that a song could be kind of "dirty" (I was 11!). Now I just enjoy the sultriness of how she sings it!
Romance, finis.
Your chance, finis.
Those ants that invaded my pants, finis.
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more
The Rodgers and Hart songbook made me appreciate Rodgers and Hart more than I did before. Her smooth delivery of Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered sealed the deal...
I love the special material Peggy wrote (rewrote her own songs) for her duet with Judy Garland on The Judy Garland Show.
