Don't ya love Peggy's "Makin Whoopie"?
Cracks me up just to think of it.
The Boswells rock - and one of their big hits was a song called "Rock 'n Roll" recorded in 1932 (I think that was the year)!
And Ella always said that Connee was the biggest influence on her as a vocalist. What a crime they never recorded an album of duets!

Speaking of Ella and duets - I was pleasantly surprised by how well Carol Burnett did with her as a guest on her show.

The Ella and Frank Duets from his TV specials are amazing -
He adores her - she has a crush on him and it's all gravy....
It's always fun to watch Frank watch other singers - he so loved the art form that unlike so many other artists - he's actually listening - and reacting...
Watch him on that Liza/Sammy/Frank thing watching Liza sing "..and the world goes round"(I think)....
..He's watching her like a hawk..and having fun..
Carol Burnett could always hold her own with almost anybody - not a class instrument -but loud with a decent strong range and good pitch...
I don't think I've heard Peggy sing "Makin' Whoopee" That must be remedied soon...
Of course, where does Dinah Washington fit into all of this? :)
Voice--I think you're describing the duet Ella and Frank do to "Can't We Be Friends"--Ella does imitations of several singers including a dead-on Della Reese--and Frank pretends to like them better.
Ella does an amazing Louis Armstrong with "Frim Fram Sauce"
Yes, Cookie--isn't that fun? She also does it on "Basin Street Blues" and "I Can't Give You Anthing but Love"--it's almost eerie.
And this one's probably just for MasterLCZ--Ella also does an amazing imitation of Rose "Chi Chi" Murphy on "...Anything but Love."
It is uber-fun! I think for "...Anthing but Love" she states who she's imitating, and then does the song in their fashion...

The Boswell's "Rock and Roll" is a favorite of mine, too.
Ella and Louis singing PORGY and BESS is a classic.
Glebb, Peggy's Making Whooppee. LOL! Sung so monotone.
"He's washin' dish-oz..."
Love Ella singing Peggy's "I Love Bein' Here With You" and referencing Miss Lee.
Also love Peggy on the Ed Sullivan show. When asked who the greatest singer is, Peggy doesn't miss a beat before replying "Ella." Sullivan tells Peggy that he thinks that both Ella and Peggy are tops. I agree with Mr. Sullivan!!
I sing to Mr. Gable,
But he's never really there.
I'm longing to enchant him
with sophisticated flair.
But ev'ry time I turn around,
Andy Hardy's in my hair!
I missed an Andy Hardy sighting?
When AH shows up, as Miss Peggy Lee said,:
Yes, it's a good day for singing a song,
and it's a good day for moving along;
Yes, it's a good day, how could anything go wrong,
A good day from morning' till night
How cruel of you Glebb to attempt to make us choose between two singing divas of the finest grade.
Ella? Peggy?.....hmmm..I so enjoy Peggy handling Coleman's "Fever"...but I find my Ella CD's on heavier rotation.
Nope.
I simply cannot do it.

Ella, Dinah, Peggy doing her rendition of " My Silent Love "
So many to choose from in all kinds of catagories, how about the pure
vanilla voice of early Doris Day?

Doris was a more than competent singer who I think never got her due...the "Love me or Leave Me" sountrack is without a doubt her most fearless singing..."10 cents a dance" - "Love me or Leave me" actually the whole soundtrack has some damn fine singing by her on it!!....
voiceanth you've posted some very insightful comments in this thread, either the skin care products cleared out that bald head on your teeny shoulders, or I've gone mad! BRAVA! Doris never got her due as a singer, there are indeed some gem recording of her out there.

I forgot to mention "Day in Hollywood" - yes the voice can be a little on the creamy side and one wishes she would "tear into" a song more but there is still some fine stuff...
Alos how can one forget Lee Wiley when one is speaking of great female singers and Lee Wiley managed to be an influence on both Peggy AND Ella.
