Lets hope we never have to choose. Thank heavens for the iPod and the shuffle feature - I have those ladies popping up randomly all day! Life is good!
But for now, Ms. Garland is singing in my ear, so I'm a bit distracted. Ah, that darn man that got away...

Now see, why isn't an easy question for me like 'Judy or . . . well, anyone else'?

Miss Peggy Lee....sultry, sexy and an accomplished composer/lyricist.

Ella for sure.
Peggy has got a pretty amazing "fever", but I prefer Eva Cassidy singing that song.

Help me decide which to listen to right now.
Thanks in advance.

Merci Jose'.
I'm sure I'll move on to Richard Rogers after HA.
I have that on my iPod...and have been enjoying it this morning. Nice way to start the day!

Ah, both were one of a kind and both just oozed cool.

It's a tie for me. I love them both, and couldn't possibly pick one.
Love 'em both, but I'm in a Connee moment right now.

I was raised on Ella and have always loved her arrangements, but became more of a Peggy fan as I got older (LOVE her Mirrors album - which I think just came out on CD, or will soon)...I would have to say that I love them equally. Ella's Cole Porter album was a favorite of mine growing up, and Peggy's Is That All There Is and I Can Sing a Rainbow have both always haunted me...

There is no way to compare the two..
Ella had, by nature, the more luscious voice and the ability to move her voice with great speed also her musicality and stunning sense of time has had very few peers (Sarah may have had an even greater vocal gift but her sense of time and speed were never her strong points).
Now, Peggy had NONE of the above - and yet, has any artist ever taken so little and made so much out of it!
Her vocal tone, when not too hidden in vapors, is pretty but nothing really special.
Her range is half of what Ella's was and probably a quarter of what Sarah's was.
..yet...
Her sense of swing and time is very much her own and while limited,it is a major example of moderate effort yeilding maximum results but what seperates Peggy Lee from the women above is her phrasing.
It is in a league with Sinatra and her ability to transmit an emotion by doing so little such as the way she phrases the line:
"..only the ashes remain" in "My Silent Love"....is astonishing....

Her duets with Crosby are terrific.
The Boswell Sisters' early recordings are blue New Orleans vocal jazz.
I adore the Boswell sisters!
