End of THE SKELETON KEY???? (AKA What the @! just happened?)
#0End of THE SKELETON KEY???? (AKA What the @! just happened?)
Posted: 8/6/06 at 11:50pmI just watched The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson and I honestly can't say what I thought of the film because I was (and still am) befuddled by the ending. I just don't understand what happened. If anyone would be kind/patient enough to help me to comprehend what happened at the end of the movie, I'd be really grateful.

Your subject title makes me laugh. Forgive me for vagueness, but the ending goes a little like this:
The old black couple did some voodoo stuff and went "into" the old couple (the ones Kate Hudson cared for). The old man she looked after knew what was going on so he couldn't speak about it. Well, the black couple knew that they needed to get into new bodies b/c the current couple they were in were going to die soon. Therefore, they hop into Kate Hudson and that other guy so that they can live forever. Get it? Yeah, it's definitely weird.

Alright... here we go.
The black maids that were hung for playing with the little children were actually the little children.
You see the spells actually have them literally switching bodies, not just sucking the "years they have left" (or whatever was said in the movie's dialogue).
So they took the bodies of the little kids and then it was them who owned the house. After that they kept on going and going (think it's only been like 2 generations?). Well, anyway, so that old lady needed to find a new body. The old man was the young guy who brought Kate Hudson there. They had already switched bodies, but the old woman hadn't yet. So, Kate Hudson was next. She finally believed in the voodoo by the end and BAM!
At the end of the movie Kate Hudson was inside the old womans body and the black maids from the start won because now they had the bodies of the 30 year olds.
I thought it was a pretty cool ending. It made the movie for me. The rest was eh...

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:14amHaha I love this movie. Also, the stuff they give Kate Hudson to drink (the same stuff they gave the old guy) is what causes them to have the stroke-like symptoms, where they can't talk and are basically paralyzed. Sorry to be anal-retentive-- its hoodoo not voodoo.

Umm, I am pretty sure it is voodoo.
But wow this sounds like a complicated ending...

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:21amNo, in this movie it's hoodoo. They make a big deal about it being different, but I can't really remember why it is.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:21amI enjoyed this movie a lot. It had a mood that was similar to The Others. It also reminded me of the movies Joan and Bette used to do in the later years of their careers a bit.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:23amI think it's because Hoodoo only works if you believe. The whole point of the movie is to get Caroline to believe in hoodoo, so they can assume her body.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:25amOooooohhhh I get it! LOL Now that I understand the ending, I thought it was a pretty good movie. Not nearly as bad as the reviews had been for it. It was fine. Nothing amazing just kinda blah save for Kate Hudson who I ALWAYS find giving incredible performances in pieces of crap lately. Gena Rowlands and Peter Sarsgaard were also very good. The writing was alright, I wish the ending was made a little more clear (I watched it with 4 other people and none of them got it). Maybe it was just us but it was very confusing at times and I wish the script was more coherent because the whole plot is ingenious IMO and could have been really great under the right hands. It also wasn't scary enough at all. Every moment that was supposed to be "scary" was so pointless and un-scary and predictable. It was fine, entertaining enough, with a very good performance from Kate Hudson (who should have won the Oscar for ALMOST FAMOUS cough cough). I just wish it had better thrills and a more coherent script.

How was "The Others"? I've been meaning to rent it...
Also, kind of off-topic but has anyone here seen "Identity"? Opinions??

I hated Identity because the twist negated any reason I had for caring about any of the characters throughout the entire movie.
And I usually love those types of movies. Mulholland Drive and Jacob's Ladder are among my all-time favorites.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:36amI liked both of them. The Others is pretty much all about mood, so if you didn't like that aspect of Skeleton Key, you may not like The Others, Wicked. I think both movies are definitely worth seeing, though.
