If you do want to see the touristy things, there is a bus line where you can get off at any point on their route, walk around and explore, then get back on again, and keep repeating if you like. I'll look into it and post a link.

p.s. The Westway is just a diner like diner food anywhere else.

I would second the recommendation for the High Line. A lovely walk on an elevated 'park' (formerly an elevated freight rail line) on the west side of Manhattan. Very enjoyable and it's free. Or, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side to Manhattan. Great views of lower Manhattan, and there's a park on the Brooklyn side with a vintage carousel.

As Jane says, it's expensive and not an everyday lunch, but imo, very good and certainly a nice treat for a visitor

A walk in the Wall Street area. St. Paul's church which survived 9/11. Then walk down to see the new building its really beautiful. Walk to Trinity Church stop in there, if you make a left and walk one block, you pass the New York Stock Exchange on your right and and Federal Hall which is a museum on your left. The large statue of George Washington is out front. Make a right and walk down Broad Street to Fraunces Tavern and have a drink or lunch or just take in the museum which is free. Make a right and walk up back to Broadway there is the Museum of the American Indian in the former Customs House. From there you can walk through Battery Park past Castle Clinton to the water. You can take the Staten Island Ferry back and forth to Staten Island and pass the Statue of Liberty at a very nominal price - about $2.00 or take the Circle Line Cruise or the Cruise to Ellis Island. A lot to do and you really do not have to pay for anything except your lunch or if you go to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island.

I love the Met and MoMA, but my favorite museum in NYC is the Frick Collection. The building itself is stunning and the Fragonard room alone is worth the price of admission. If you go for a stroll through Central Park and see Bethesda Fountain, the Frick is not far, located at 70th Street and Park Avenue.
