I thought Breslin was magical. She rooted the entire film...and when you take into account the fact that the film features top notch performances by Collette, Carrell, Kinnear and Arkin, that's no small feat. She wasn't the least bit precocious and I became extremely invested in the film all because of her performance.
As for Hudson, she may not have great range. She most likely isn't the best in her category in terms of technique. But what she accomplished with that one number is something I've never, in my life, experienced in a movie theatre and I'd gladly hand her any award for it.
