That's how I feel about Jennifer Hudson. She was great in Dreamgirls.....a fantastic breakthru performance. But I wouldn't consider it Oscar-worthy...imo.

Well, I felt the same way about Reese Witherspoon last year, but she still won the Oscar.

I thought Breslin was magical. She rooted the entire film...and when you take into account the fact that the film features top notch performances by Collette, Carrell, Kinnear and Arkin, that's no small feat. She wasn't the least bit precocious and I became extremely invested in the film all because of her performance.
As for Hudson, she may not have great range. She most likely isn't the best in her category in terms of technique. But what she accomplished with that one number is something I've never, in my life, experienced in a movie theatre and I'd gladly hand her any award for it.

That Best Actress category has been locked for quite some time. Unless there's a huge push for someone, those five ladies are getting their nods in a few weeks.
Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and a slot or two in Supporting Actress seem to be up in the air.
And as of right now, I'd say JHud will most likely take home the Oscar. She'll win the Globe on Monday, and eventually go onto the Oscar as long as she doesn't lose any steam. The only award I don't see her winning may very well be the SAG. If she snags the SAG, which is up in the air since the guild loves to give it to vets and the well respected, then she's a shoe-in for the Academy Award.

Wow, the screeplay for Children of Men was the weakest part of that movie. It needs to be nominated for director and... nothing else. Go Cuaron!

I'd say get rid of Streep for Prada (though very good in the film), I'd place Toni Collette there instead because Streep has sooooooo many nominations in the past, I for one wish there could be others nominated, as it sometimes seems like Deja Vu at the Oscars each year. Although I have a feeling Mirran is a shoe in for the Oscar which is fine with me.

Streep should be in supporting. Hudson should be in lead. But what can you do?
I thought Breslin was completely charming but I wouldn't in a million years put her work in LMS anywhere near the performances of previous child winners like Patty Duke in THE MIRACLE WORKER or Anna Paquin in THE PIANO who gave astonishing performances that would have been extraordinary whatever age they were.
Breslin will get nominated because people like the film and it will be fun to see her on the red carpet. It's not an award worthy performance, IMO, because - outside of the "Best Ensemble" SAG Award - I don't really think its an award worthy film.

Seeing it again, I stil feel SUNSHINE is one of the most enjoyable but overrated films in a fairly lean year. On second viewing, I appreciated the set-up far more, and the farce-like middle (the schlepping of Arkin epsiode -- ripped out of VACATION, entirely unrealistic in otherwise realistic universe) much less. The movie has some satiric teeth only in its portrayal of the pageant, but then somewhat dilutes it with the family's on-stage participation. I especially don't understand the DGA nomination(s). That said, I think it's good to embrace and award comedy -- writing, playing. If it's no ANNIE HALL, maybe it'll helpt "the next one..." We always say that; would that it were true.
