Which character do you like better and why? Which character gets more time on stage singing? I want opinions because I have been offered which ever of the two I want for our school's musical. (I am a 1st soprano, but I have a wide range)
I think just about everyone likes Eponine better. It's not Cosette's fault, she's just terribly insipid. I believe Cosette gets more to sing, but there's not much in it, and Eponine gets the show-stealer. Cosette is good if you're a higher soprano and want to play a fairly happy character who gets the guy. Eponine is good if you're a slightly lower voice and would rather play a tragic character suffering unrequited love.
FANTINE!
I would say Eponine just for the death scene.
I think I'm the only person who likes Cossette better...but I think its because my original exposure to Les Mis was the original London cast and she had another song and I think it gave her a lot more depth...
But honestly I would take Eponine.

I think most people like Eponine better...her character seems to have more depth and such.
Lately though, I like Fantine a lot.
I always loved Fantine best but, as a soprano - even a quite rangy one who should do more work on her break and less on her tenor - I find it very difficult reaching her low notes. ;_;

I like Cosette. I just tried out for Les Mis for summer theater and I'm hoping I get Cosette, as opposed to Fantine, the other part I sang for at my callback after my initial audition. In my opinion, Cosette is more of a challenge to play because she has so little to work with, you have to work hard to make her stand out, Fantine and Eponine have such emotional songs they don't have to try as hard to stand out.
