Oh god, I found it difficult to sustain any interest in seeing Tootsie even one time through.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. It's one of my favorites, and it gets better every time.

Well, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream!

Shakespeare deserved it... Saving Private Ryan didn't hold my attention as much.

There's always this assumption that the films nominated were actually the best films of the year. That's hardly ever the case. However, Shakespeare in Love did deserve it over Saving Private Ryan, which may just be the most overrated film ever made. It has this ridiculously over-the-top opening, that goes on and on and on, which is followed by an extended episode of Combat, only not as original or interesting; and, without absolutely any relationship to the tedious opening that precedes it. It is then concluded with what would have been considered hokum, in 1946!
