Come on...you know you want to reply...
I dare you...
Yes only because to me, a Best Picture is more than what CRASH was...even though I really did think CRASH was amazing and important.
I dunno. I was pretty disappointed.
Beating a dead horse.
Really.
Just because Heath died, doesn't make it any better than it was.
Well that's true.
But I'm also going to say that I really didn't like Jake in it. In fact, I don't think I've ever really liked him anything.
It was a great movie. It was landmark in what it achieved.
But I think Crash told a better story on so many levels.
zzzzzzzzzzzz. . .
Crash deserved it.
This debate is as tired as it gets.
....but I hated CRASH way back in EARLY 2005 before it even had an inkling of awards buzz.
You are wrong, Diva. Heath's drug induced death has made BM even BETTER than it was. And it proves that it SHOULD have won the Oscar. And his drug induced death will make Batman even better, too. Watch all the "oh, all I could think of is that THIS IS HEATH'S LAST PERFORMANCE EVER" threads when that movie opens.
Please refer to my sig quote when you want to call me wrong.
Crash really was very good. But agian, I stand by my original comment.
Actually, I really am going to see Batman. I never would if it weren't Heath. Pathetic, maybe. But there it is.

Sueleen is right. With behindsight being what it is, I have to say I wish Keith Ledger had won the Oscar and the movie best picture. That way, he could have known what that felt like. And many people may recall I had a slightly negative take on the movie at the time. But now I see how wrongful I was.
Heath & not Keith.
Because Keith is a sucky actor.
The fact remains that "Brokeback" didn't win, so I fail to see how arguing about whether it should have would qualify as "fun."
I dunno, I'm still arguing about Don Cheadle not winning for HOTEL RWANDA. It's pointless..because he didn't...I was so angry that night. And that week. And that year.
And now.
CRASH sucked in so many ways I lose count.
The real winner should have been "Bareback Mounting".
I'm still arguing about Don Cheadle not winning for HOTEL RWANDA.
Now, that is a discussion worth having!
I'm glad you agree. Because that was horrible.
This really has been talked to death hasn't it? Brokeback was such a stunning achievement and watershed moment in modern American cinema. This one will make it into the canon of 21st Century Cinema.
We've all heard the claims of homophobia. I think there's probably some truth to that with the older, more conservative voters, but that could hardly explain Crash's win outright.
Crash definitely had it's fans. It was a film set in Los Angeles where the majority of Academy voters live, it had a large cast of popular, respected actors, it felt "important" and had a message that the Academy could easily get behind and at the time of voting it wasn't widely known that Paul Hagis was
Crash was a decent if overly didactic film.
I'm kind of kidding about Hagis, really. I admire his work with Clint Eastwoood.
I think the combination of the true Crash fans and those who felt uncomfortable voting for a film about a homosexual love affair was enough to take Crash over the edge.
I'm just glad that Ang Lee was recognized for his remarkable achievement.

Not this again....
" With behindsight being what it is"
LOL!
If Brokeback had won the Oscar, Heath would still be alive.
The Academy killed Heath Ledger.
Same with Judy Garland. If they had given her the Oscar over Grace Kelly, Judy would have played Carlotta in the original Follies instead of Yvonne DeCarlo and Mame in the movie instead of Lucy and taken over Gypsy on Broadway from Angela Lansbury and...and...
Uh-oh...
I hope the American Theatre Wing hasn't contributed to a future untimely death of Raul Esparza.
Yes, plain and simple. A fantastic drama, compelling character study, and a devastating romance. Perfect performances (even in the limited roles), gorgeous cinematography, assured direction, and a haunting score.
In fact, the only flaw I can pinpoint is the aging make-up. Other than that, superb in every way and undoubtedly a future classic.

I thought Brokeback Mountain was beautiful and hoped it would win.
broadway86, I agree with you about the makeup. Aging Jack Twist with his pornstache...yikes.
Brokeback was a beautiful film through and through. And I cried. But CRASH stuck with me for several days. I couldn't shake it. I think it deserved to win.
