Now if the titles were all magically commercial-free and did not got to 90 seconds of ads every 15 minutes, I might just be up for the challenge.

Do the movies have commercials, too? I thought it was just the tv shows.

Yes, even on the Criterion titles (they usually have had a good selection of documentaries and on the rare occasion they have had Criterion titles available without the for-pay Hulu+ but it takes forever to get through stuff).

Yes-that sounds awful. Take a film masterpiece that was given the Criterion treatment and add commercials. That's a fail. I wont waste my time.

I have Hulu Plus. I thought they always had the Criterion Collection available (although perhaps not all 800 titles).

Hey film buffs, I recently signed up for Hulu+ and now have access to this massive library of Criterion Collection films. I'm ashamed to say that I've watched maybe 10 of the 800+ films. Time to catch up. So which films from the Criterion Collection have you watched? Any favorites? Must-sees? I'm popping open a box of c****nay and settling into The Vanishing tonight. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to sleep after!

'VANISHING' spoilers aheda...

Actually, tiny3, I had no trouble sleeping after. The film was definitely of its time. It just felt a bit dated to me. I think the bad synth soundtrack, some of the directorial and editing choices and most of all the somewhat hammy performance of the killer made the film unintentionally silly. He wasn't a terribly menacing or even interesting killer. I thought the actors playing Rex and Saskia were marvelous, though.

Also, from the moment Saskia described her recurring dream in which she and Rex were trapped in eggs floating in space, I guessed that she was going to be buried alive as something more supernatural seemed unlikely so the ending wasn't terribly shocking for me.

On to my next Criterion film. Any recommendations?

Even without their full catalog, there's so much on Hulu Plus from Criterion!

Just off the top of my head, some of the ones I've taken in and enjoyed most since signing up last year.

CITY LIGHTS
MODERN TIMES
SAFETY LAST!
STAGECOACH
THE SEVENTH SEAL
PERSONA
RASHOMON
YOJIMBO
SEVEN SAMURAI
FOR ALL MANKIND
GIMME SHELTER
MAN BITES DOG
LA HAINE
DIABOLIQUE
THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS
Z
THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK
KNIFE IN THE WATER
THE NAKED CITY

and there's so many I still look forward to catching up with and exploring that I never knew...

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Thanks for the recommendations, JNB. Yeah, it's kind of overwhelming, but I'm excited to dive in.

I would also recommend, even though not all the films featured are in their Hulu Plus inventory, Criterion's series of "Three Reasons" videos. They can be found on their website or their YouTube channel, and they provide excellent brief overviews of each of the featured films.
