As for THE NEXT BEST THING, well. I'll give her credit for taking such a risk in playing such a completely revolting character, unless of course she's not supposed to be completely revolting.

Heh. It didn't seem like anyone involved with the film thought her character was revolting, even though she was. Why more gay men didn't riot after that film is beyond me. It was one of the most offensive pieces of tripe I'd ever seen, and it the fact that Madonna was attached to it was just inexplicable. That movie regards gays with such contempt it's almost laughable.

Well, I thought Next Best Thing merely attempted to show a harsh reality--not crap on gays. It was an awful film.

I hope they release this edition of Evita. In fact, I wish Madonna and Antonio would do a commentary.

I think that's awfully generous of you, but I suppose I could see that. I never saw it that way, though. I thought it was a cautionary tale for gays to not bite the straight hand that feeds them.

"cautionary tale for gays not to bite the straight hand that feeds them."

I didn't see that at all. The movie is so gay friendly it gets nauseating, and the straight people in it are a pack of self-righteous idiots. But trying to take a coherent message out of this idiotic movie beyond "let's all get along and live in CA and do yoga" doesn't lead to much.

Oh, I have to disagree with there. In the first act, Rupert pretends to be a mincing, flaming queen to embarrasses Madonna's ex. Then Madonna tells Rupert that the baby she is carrying his, but it turns it out it isn't. She withholds that information until she no longer needs to use him for his support, then springs on him that he's actually not the father. She then winds up giving information to her lawyer to use against Rupert in court, where he is shamed and humiliated for his dirty gay behavior. Finally, in the last act, she relents and lets him see the son, because she's got all the cards.

I don't see how anyone could see anything gay friendly about this movie.
