The Simpsons has been denied best comedy consideration for its entire run - many say the quality has declined, but even in its heyday - I can't see how FG is getting the nomination when this is the short list:

Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Family Guy, Flight of the Conchords, The Office, Pushing Daisies, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men, Ugly Betty, and Weeds

And if anyone's interested, the short list for drama:
Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Grey's Anatomy, House, Lost, Mad Men, The Tudors, and The Wire.

I'd be really bummed if Family Guy were the first animated show to land a nomination for best sitcom after the Simpsons were denied it for so so many years. If they do nominate FG they better give Simpsons a lifetime achievement Emmy that same night.

I think Family is funny, but those other shows are leagues above it in quality

Even the best episodes of Family are nothing compared to best episodes of The Simpsons, I would be really disappointed if they got a nod for best comedy. Esp. with competition like Weeds, The Office, 30 Rock, and Flight of Concords.

I agree. I love Family Guy, but The Simpsons have much better writing (if not so much now, they certainly did in the first 12 seasons).
